Every couple of weeks we feel like we are writing about the newest unit from up and coming vaporizer producer Boundless Technologies. Today we will be looking at their most portable unit yet, the Boundless CFC. We are happy to see a more portable package from Boundless as there flagship unit the Boundless CFX is a bit on the large end. But do good things come in small packages? Read our review to find out.
Review: Boundless CFC
How it Works
This unit in a lot of ways reminds us of the G-Pen Elite, especially with how it works. You remove the mouthpiece to expose the wide ceramic heating chamber. Fill it with your desired herbs and place the mouthpiece back on the unit.
Press the power button on the CFC five times quickly to get the device to turn on and it will automatically start heating up to the last set temperature.
Pressing the up and down temperature buttons simultaneously will allow you to easily switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius. The CFC can be set anywhere between 100C and 230C, for best results we recommend between 180C – 220C.
After 10 minutes the device will automatically turn off to preserve battery life, if you want to continue your session just repeat the steps to turn the device back on and resume your session.
For such a small device we were pretty happy to see a digital display and such a wide range of temperatures available for users. Because this device has precise temperature control through the LED screen you can easily set the temperature down to the individual degree. This unit allows you to set it anywhere up to 230 Celsius which is great for those who enjoy denser vapor.
Vapor Quality at lower temperatures is actually pretty decent, you get thin wispy clouds but you can really taste the full flavor of your herbs.
At higher temperatures the first few draws will yield flavorful vapor along with decent visible vapor production. However flavor will quickly diminish and start to have a more cooked taste to the entire session.
We should also note that at higher temperatures the mouthpiece can become quite warm and the air/vapor flowing from the mouthpiece can be quite hot on the lips. This is due to the short vapor path and something we experienced first with the G-Pen Elite.
Unfortunately this is the Achilles heel to small vaporizers and why units like the Pax 3 puts the oven on the bottom of their devices to avoid this issue.
We found up until 210 celsius seemed to be okay, but increasing the temperature past this point led to hot and harsh draws throughout the session.
All Boundless units seem to be held to the same high-quality manufacturing standards. The CFC is nicely designed and fits well in your hands. The LED display is bright and easy to read at a glance.
Like the G-Pen Elite, the Boundless CFC is constructed entirely of plastic which does give a slightly cheaper aesthetic to the device, but overall the finish and weight still gives you a sense of quality.
The chamber is nicely sized and can fit between .3 to .5 grams of botanical depending on packing method.
Our only reservation with this unit is the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is constructed entirely of medical grade plastic making it safe to use with higher heats, however it does not do a good job at dissipating heat before it reaches your lips.
Furthermore the mouthpiece tends to absorb heat and in turn becomes warmer throughout your session. We wish Boundless would have opted for a design closer to the G-Pen Elite and included a silicone sleeve to slip on the plastic mouthpiece for some added heat protection.
Battery life is actually impressive for such a tiny device lasting us about an hour of vaping or about 4 – 5 sessions. Obviously with a unit this small battery life is always going to be limited so we are at least happy to see an average battery life from such a portable device.
The CFC does not feature a removeable battery but does charge via micro USB (like everything does nowadays) which makes charging the unit on the go a breeze.
The CFC is an extremely portable device rivaling units like the Pax 3 and V2 Series 7. It can be easily stored in a pocket or purse when transporting.
The CFC also provides you with up to an hour of charge power which makes this device perfect to take with you for a day out.
Our only complaint is the fragile plastic mouthpiece which can easily pop off if enough pressure is applied. We also fear it will not stand up to any serious bumps or drops when transporting, so if you do take your CFC with you just be careful with the mouthpiece.
The Boundless CFC has some serious potential to be a great portable device but has some kinks to work out. For those who enjoy thinner and more flavorful vapor the CFC may be a unit worth considering.
But for those who enjoy higher temperatures, the CFC tends to suffer from hot vapor and a warm mouthpiece because of the short vapor path. You may want to consider a device with a slightly longer vapor path like the Vapir Prima or even Arizer Air.
