The G Pen Herbal was the first vaporizer offered by Grenco Science that was specifically designed for dry material. This pen-style vape has a slick design, and the relatively low price point is attractive for many first-time vape buyers. It looks basically identical to their wax G Pen and is very easily portable and is discreet. Unfortunately, our experience suggests that it isn’t very good at its main job, as you can very easily combust your material while using this pen, which basically means you will be inhaling smoke, not vapor.
We are happy to report that Grenco has designed a new “G-Pen” that offers true vaporization, the G-Pen Elite. It’s not as small as previous G-Pen’s but is a huge improvement over their G-Pro. We highly recommend checking it out here if you are looking for a true vaporizer.
Review: G-Pen Herbal
How it Works
The G Pen Herbal functions very similarly to the other G Pens on the market. This vape has a 1-button design and powers on with 5 clicks. The herb chamber is accessed by unscrewing the mouthpiece, and the battery is set in the bottom half of the unit. Once you have loaded the chamber and replaced the mouthpiece, the heating element is engaged by pressing and holding the button. There is virtually no time between initiating the heating coil and creating what can only be referred to as smoke.
This device has zero temperature flexibility. Everything is pre-set, and the heating element is either engaged or it’s not. To our knowledge, there is no way to change how hot the element can get, other than inhaling faster or slower which will cool down the chamber temperature a little bit. This is the main reason why you will have difficulty avoiding combustion with this unit. If you want a G Pen with temperature flexibility, opt for the G Pen Elite which have precise temperature controls to the individual degree.
You won’t be dealing with pure vapor, so we have to rate the vapor quality as quite poor. After 1 or 2 draws, the herb resting on the heating coil will start to burn. This is a major problem if you are interested in achieving smooth vapor with good flavor.
Technically you may be able to avoid completely combusting your material by repeatedly stirring after every other draw and allowing the unit to cool in between, but this makes the device difficult and unpleasant to use. If you are spending the money to invest in a vaporizer, there are so many other great portables that don’t carry these difficulties or dangers, so it’s hard to justify this one.
The exterior of this vaporizer is surprisingly well-built. The outer encasement is entirely stainless steel, and the chamber/tank is made from glass. Appearances can be deceiving though, and the fact that you can’t rely on this to deliver consistent vapor without combusting makes us wish that more work was put into the design. For example, other pen vapes such as the V2 Pro Series 3 have managed to pull off pure vaporization with a unique tank design, which doesn’t use a coil as the heat source. We try to be as positive as possible, but the G Pen Herbal is marketed as an herbal vaporizer and there are certain standards to expect, pure vapor being one of them!
The battery life for the G Pen Herbal is comparable with other pen-style vapes. The battery itself is 900 mAh and should last about 2 hours with continuous usage. These are industry average specs, so there is nothing here that would justify purchasing this vape given the other problems we’ve indicated.
All pen vapes tend to excel in this category, and the G Pen Herbal is no exception. The battery lasts long enough that you won’t have to charge frequently, and even when you do you can use any USB port to charge. With all that being said, there is glass on this unit and others offer smaller sizes that make for more convenient storage and carrying. If you like this vape but want something more portable, there is always the G Pen MicroG Herbal.
Ease of Use
While we’ve indicated a fair amount of criticisms, we’ll at least give the G Pen Herbal the fact that it is incredibly easy to use. If you aren’t concerned about whether or not you get some smoke and just want something to pull out at parties and get the job done, this may serve your purposes fine. Other than loading the chamber and turning the device on, the only thing you need to do is press a button and draw. Easy peasy! It is important to note however that all pen vaporizer tanks are disposable. So you will need to replace the heating chamber/ coil on this one every 4-8 weeks depending on use, which can sometimes be an inconvenience to source.
If you’ve read the whole review, it should come as no surprise that we do not recommend the G Pen Herbal vaporizer. While branded as an herbal vaporizer for ‘Ground Material’, this device simply does not deliver. A true vaporizer produces vapor and does not include a risk of combustion. There’s nothing exceptional in terms of overall design, battery life or size, meaning there’s a better vape out there for virtually all purposes – you may just need to toss some extra cash at your other vape choice.
If you really like the pen look, then check out the V2 Pro Series 3 and make sure to purchase the additional loose leaf cartridge for true vaporization of your dry herbs.
While it costs more, Grenco’s own G Pen Elite is also a good place to start looking for an alternative too. The Elite offers all the things we would like to see in an herbal vaporizer, and then some. It is arguably sleeker, more ergonomic and even offers full temperature control with a digital display. More importantly, you’ll get true vapor with no risk of combustion!
