Our customers are some of the most creative and ingenious people we meet. Once in a while someone will call in with an idea that blows us away, and we’re happy to bring you a story about one of those moments today! A gentleman named Grant came in for a pickup and showed us an awesome little modification to his vaporizer. Like MacGyver, Grant just used things lying around that most of us wouldn’t pay any mind to – a brilliant mind sees opportunity where others don’t!
Solo Vaporizer Macgyver
Grant has owned an Arizer Solo for a few years now. He loves the unit for its amazing vapor quality and says he wouldn’t replace it for any other vaporizer. One thing that he had a problem with though was breaking the glass stems for the vaporizer. After going through a few replacement tubes over the years, he started thinking about a solution. He tried being careful with the tubes, but was self-admittedly a bit of a butterfingers. Necessity is the mother of invention they say, and Grant came up with a brilliant idea.
He also owns an Iolite V2, a butane powered vaporizer. He examined the V2’s heating chamber and realized it’s about the same size as the Solo’s heating chamber.
The V2’s mouthpiece, attached to the heating chamber, is plastic. Grant knew that if he dropped this mouthpiece, there would be no problems with breakage in the way that there was with the Solo’s glass tubes.
He went to insert the V2’s chamber into the Solo and his suspicions were confirmed. They are almost the exact same size! It still wasn’t a perfect fit, as the Iolite’s chamber was a little loose in the unit’s heating chamber. He carefully removed the fat black plastic guard between the mouthpiece of the V2 and its chamber. With this guard out of the way, the chamber inserted all the way into the Solo. Grant noticed that there wasn’t a perfect seal, but he was able to use the unit like this for a while. What happened next was a vaporizing miracle.
Grant racked his brain for weeks thinking about what he could do to improve the seal on his improvised mouthpiece. One afternoon he went for a walk in the park. While strolling around, he enjoyed some vapor from his Solo. Just as he finished vaporizing, he looked down at the trail he was walking along. Something bright caught his eye, and he bent down to pick it up.
A metal washer perfect in diameter to fit around his Iolite’s stem lay on the ground below him. He snatched it up, took it home, and after washing it quickly he slid it over his Iolite’s mouthpiece. Eureka! The washer fit perfectly, and the weight of it created a seal between the V2’s chamber and his Solo’s heating chamber. The modified V2 Chamber, with washer.
Finally, Grant added one finishing touch to his modified mouthpiece/heating chamber. To prevent his botanical from falling out of the V2’s chamber once he fills it up he places a screen at the end of it. This creates an environment for hot air to flow through his botanical without any of it falling into the heating chamber. This resulted in one of the cleanest Solos we’ve ever seen, despite it being years old.
The modified V2 Chamber with the additional end screen to prevent botanical from falling out.
We would never have thought of using the V2’s mouthpiece in this way, but it just goes to show that our customers think outside of the box. If you’re someone who has trouble breaking glass stems, this would be an excellent solution for you. If you would like to learn more about the Arizer Solo, check out the Arizer Solo Review!
