Review: Crafty Vaporizer
- Video Transcript
- What’s up everyone? This is Keagan for TorontoV TV. Let’s have a look at the Crafty vaporizer, one of the very first portable vaporizers to be released by Storz and Bickel, the makers of the famous volcano vaporizer. First i’ll tell you what’s in the box, then we’re getting to how it works.
Inside the package you’ll find the Crafty vaporizer, one power adapter with USB cable, one liquid pad, three spare screens, a cleaning brush, a herb mill, a filling aid, one set of spare seal rings and if you order with us you can also choose to receive a Zeus Bolt Grinder made of aircraft-grade aluminum.
The first thing you’re going to want to do with your unit is sterilize it. To do that, press and hold the power button to turn the unit on, and then double press the power button in order to set the unit into its booster temperature setting. Next, press the power button every 45 seconds or so to keep the unit going. You want this unit to stay on for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will get rid of all of the manufacturing oils that may have gotten into the unit as a result of putting it together. Once that’s done the unit is ready for use.
To load your Crafty vaporizer you’re gonna need two things. The first thing is freshly ground botanical. To grind up your botanical we always suggest using the Zeus Bolt Grinder. It’s been calibrated to grind up your botanical to that perfect consistency. That means it’s fine enough to be efficiently vaporized inside of your unit but not so fine that it slips through the screens. The second thing you’re going to need to do is twist off the top to expose the heating chamber. Once it’s open, take your botanical and fill up the heating chamber all the way to the top. If you don’t intend to fully fill your heating chamber, fill it up as much as you’d like then use the aroma pad to fill the rest of the space inside the heating chamber. Once you’re done take the top and place it back onto the unit and twist it to lock it in place.
The Crafty vaporizer comes with a default basic temperature of 190°C and a default booster temperature of 195°C. But these temperatures can be customised by each and every connoisseur to suit their own personal needs. This can be done using the Crafty app. Once the app has been downloaded to your smartphone and has been connected to your Crafty vaporizer you can set the basic and boost your temperatures from anywhere between 40°C and 210°C. For best results we suggest vaporizing your botanical between 190°C and 210°C. For use of extracts we suggest vaporizing at 210°C. Once your unit has been loaded to use a Crafty vaporizer press and hold power button to turn the unit on. Once the unit is on you can also double press the power button to engage the unit in its booster temperature setting. When unit has reached temperature it’ll give off a short double vibration. Then swivel out the mouthpiece and take deep draws to enjoy your vapor. The unit has a 60 second auto shut-off. So it may be necessary to press the power button every 45 seconds or so to keep the unit from turning itself off.
To wrap this video up I’d like to tell you guys about some of the impressive features that make the Crafty vaporizer such an amazing unit. The first is that it’s super compact. Use of the single lithium ion battery makes this unit really small so that it’s super easy to carry it around with you no matter where you want to take it. The second is that this unit has amazing vapor quality. Storz and Bickel are known for creating stationary vaporizers that have amazing vapor experiences and they’ve brought all the quality that you’ve come to know and expect from their stationary vaporizers into the portable world using the Crafty vaporizer. The third thing is this unit is really customizable; using the Crafty app you can set the basic and booster temperatures as well as whole other settings in the vaporizer to suit your personal needs easily and quickly.
This vaporizer is great for any kind of connoisseur who’s looking for unit that delivers incredible vapor quality and a super portable package to create a top of the line experience that they can enjoy on the go.
I’m Keagan for TorontoV TV. We hope you enjoyed this video and we hope you find it useful. And for all you connoisseurs out there: “Keep vaping!”
How It Works
The Crafty is a very simple design from the standpoint of the actual unit itself. The unit itself only has one button on it, which is used to turn the unit on. Once the unit is on, it will heat up to the basic temperature which is 180 Celsius. The unit also has a booster temperature which is 195 Celsius and can be achieved by double-pressing the power button.
These two temperatures are pre-set by the manufacturer as defaults, but using the Crafty App, a smart phone app for Andriod and iOS, you can change what those temperatures are as well as see the unit’s charge level and adjust other settings of the unit. If you would like to watch the “how it works” video, you can do so on the Crafty Vaporizer product page.
Originally, we assumed the unit’s default temperature settings were all the unit had to offer when it came to temperature flexibility, which is correct if you only have the unit and opt not to download and use the app. Once you’ve done that, the unit’s temperature can be set to anything between 40 Celsius and 210 Celsius, which is a big plus for a portable unit.
You can set what temperature is considered to be the basic temperature as well as what temperature is considered the booster temperature. This does still limit the unit to two actual settings while in use, but with the temperature accuracy of a unit such as the ones made by Storz and Bickel, two temperature settings is good enough to get the job done well.
The vapor quality you can expect from the Crafty is nothing less than outstanding. This contradicts every logical thought that an experienced connoisseur might have when they see a unit that uses as much plastic as the Crafty does. Despite the plastic mouth piece, there is no plastic flavor in the vapor and the vapor is smooth, cool and surprisingly satisfying.
The mesh screens do a great job of filtering out particles of your botanical to make every draw pure, flavorful and unaccompanied on its trip from the heating chamber to your mouth. There is also very little resistance to your draw thanks to the fantastic airflow in the unit. This made every draw all the more pleasurable!
Now if you’re looking to get the best vaporization experience possible with the Crafty we’d like to recommend pairing your unit with the new vapor cooling device from ZEUSArsenal, the ZEUS Iceborn. This revolutionary device actually increases the vapor quality of your Crafty by 2 points, dramatically cooling it down for smooth frosty draws. It’s also much more efficient than other filtration devices that use water, so you can get even bigger vapor clouds! Take a look!
When one thinks Storz and Bickel, you wouldn’t normally think of a plastic unit. Regardless, the unit looks and feels high quality – like a well-made power tool a lot like the Plenty. When you look at the unit, it doesn’t offer much in the way of aesthetic pleasantries, but what it lacks in form, it makes up for in function.
It sports a large heating chamber typical of a product from Storz and Bickel, and the grating all around the unit does a good job of dissipating heat while still keeping the unit comfortable to hold. The one gripe we have with the unit in this category is the tool provided to stir and/or poke at your botanical, which is plastic.
We can assume due to the reputation of the company in question, the materials have all been vetted and found safe. Unfortunately, we still don’t prefer plastic to be used in components that will be in close contact with the heating chamber. We’d prefer if the tool was made out of some sort of metal instead.
The unit is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which can be charged via USB or wall charger. The original iteration of the Crafty was noted for having a notoriously short battery life lasting roughly 3 sessions or 45 minutes.
It would seem that Storz & Bickel have heard these complaints loud and clear. The latest versions of the Crafty are now shipping with an extra 20% battery life. This increase will bring the battery life of the Crafty to just over an hour of use and should now last 4 – 5 sessions before needing to be charged.
The battery still is not removable, but the fact that we now have some more juice to work with makes us feel better with taking our Crafty out for a day trip without worrying about it dying half way through. And while it still is not as long at the Mighty’s battery, it brings the unit closer in line with what the Mighty has to offer and does not make it such a dramatic step down.
One of the clear advantages of this unit over the Mighty Vaporizer (Read review here) is its size. It’s small enough to easily slip it into your pocket and light enough that you’ll barely notice it while it’s there.
The mouth piece also swivels out of the way to avoid it becoming a problem during transportation. To top things off, the unit’s controls are mostly hidden in the app that you use on your phone. This is a nice feature because you’ll likely have your phone on you anyways so it won’t take up extra space.
Ease of Use
This unit is remarkably easy to use. The one button on the outside of the unit is used to turn the unit on and switch between basic and booster temperatures while the app gives you control over the basic and booster temperatures to customize the experience to your own needs. The only problem we found when using this unit was related to the auto shut off. This feature keeps you from draining your battery too much during your session, but its set to turn the unit off if no button is pressed within 60 seconds.
This means you’ll have to press the button at least every 59 seconds during your session until you’re completely finished. The unit does vibrate to let you know it has turned off, and it is quick to turn back on, but that feature did prove to be a bit of a nuisance during the session as Vapesterdam also pointed out. The unit will also need some regular cleaning to keep it operating at top performance, but that maintenance will be much less difficult and frequent than a unit like the Pax.
The Crafty is a very stealthy unit. It’s small enough to conceal in the palm of your hand, it’s quiet while in use and it’s easy to put away quickly if the need arises.
This makes the unit surprisingly discreet and a great choice for people looking for a unit that has great vapor quality but is also very discreet. Even using the app with the unit can be passed off as someone tinkering on their phone and nothing more.
This function-over-form unit is fantastically made, well machined, easy to use and provides fantastic vapor quality, all in a discreet and portable package. Storz and Bickel may have taken a while to enter the portable vaporizer market, but they’ve done so with a huge splash.
They’ve brought the efficiency and vapor quality of the Volcano conveniently into the hands of connoisseurs in a way that can easily stand above the Ascent and Solo. If you’re looking for a great new unit that you can use on the go and at home that provides the same top of the line experience as the Volcano, the Crafty is the unit for you! For more detail in comparison I also recommend checking out the comparison review Crafty vs Mighty vaporizer, but if you are set on the crafty you can check the latest price for the Crafty vaporizer, by following the link.
Editors Note: If you are interested in the convection power of the Crafty but can’t stomach the price, Utillian has released the worlds cheapest convection vaporizer the Utillian 721 which gives the Crafty a run for its money and is worth checking out, you can read our review here.
