The Iolite vaporizer
is the first portable vaporizer that completely dominated the market around 2010-2011. After the Arizer Solo was released, the glamor disappeared and the Iolite was displaced as the best portable vaporizer. Oglesby and Butler, based in Ireland, makes really nice looking units, and unlike any other vaporizer they run on purified butane. This means you never have to worry about charging your battery on the go. Here’s a rundown of all the other reasons why you might choose the original Iolite vaporizer, and what issues to look out for.

How to Use the Iolite Vaporizer
The Iolite has a little valve for butane at the top of the unit. Shake the can of purified butane and then insert the nozzle of your can of butane into the valve. Firmly push the butane into the unit and hold for two seconds, and then repeat two-three times until a little butane runs out at the edge. Afterwards, wait a few seconds and then move the on/off switch to 1. Press the ignition switch two or three times and you will see a small orange light appear on the opposite side. This light appears while the unit is heating, and will turn off when it’s heated up.
The Iolite’s heating chamber is attached to the mouthpiece, so when it is fully heated just pull it out and insert your botanicals, being careful to avoid the hot metal. Then reinsert it, by holding the unit upside down over the heating chamber and sliding it down onto it. From now on, the indicator light will go on and off to keep the unit at a constant temperature. As long as the switch is at one, the unit is heated and you can take draws through the mouthpiece.
The Iolite only heats up to 190°C. This is an ideal temperature for vaporizing, as it will extract the essential oils without burning any of the material. If you prefer a thicker, denser vapor, however, this might be a bit low for you. The optimizer will enable you to get slightly better heat conduction and thicker vapor, but overall the Iolite vaporizer
does not have much temperature flexibility. You can also control the vapor density by how quickly you draw through the mouthpiece. The slower you draw the thicker the vapor.
The temperature stability gives good consistent vapor quality. A lot of people worry with butane powered units that the butane is going to affect the vapor. This is not a problem with the Iolite Vape. It doesn’t burn or release any butane. It contains a catalytic converter which converts the fuel into heat energy. There is no taste of butane in the vapor, and it’s relatively decent vapor for this price category. The main worry customer have about this unit is the butane. However the butane only runs through the system, when the unit is heating.
During the heating time, one would not be drawing, since the unit is not hot enough. The exhaust is on the sides of the Iolite, but the drawing and air path are on the top. This makes it relatively rare that one would get any noticeable butane exhaust mixed up with the vapor. The heating chamber is designed to efficiently use all of your botanical, and you can make it even more efficient by using the optimizer accessory.
Now if you’re looking to get the best vaporization experience possible with the Iolite we’d like to recommend pairing your unit with the new vapor cooling device from ZEUSArsenal, the ZEUS Iceborn
. This revolutionary device actually increases the vapor quality of your Iolite by 2 points, dramatically cooling it down for smooth frosty draws. It’s also much more efficient than other filtration devices that use water, so you can get even bigger vapor clouds! Take a look!
Iolite has won several awards for their contributions to Ireland’s regional economy. The Iolite has been on the market for a long time and gained recognition as a good portable very early on. The design is sleek and very nice, but the weakness of this unit lies in its manufacturing quality. The catalytic converter is patented and unique to Iolite, but it does act up. Recently quality control issues have increased the Iolites warranty issues and created some negative impact on this unit’s popularity. You get a 2 year warranty, which means that your unit will be replaced if it is defective, but the major problem is the downtime. Once you start vaporizing, going back is a bit inconvenient and having your unit trapped in warranty processing for a month is not ideal. In this category Iolite needs to improve, but the manufacturer decreased the price-point to $149, compared to $239 in 2009, making this unit still an attractive purchase.
Portability is a very strong feature of the Iolite Vape. Because there’s no battery, you just have to make sure your unit is full of butane, and then it will last you for up to one hour of use. One can of purified butane, will probably be all you need to not worry about fuel for the foreseeable future. The Iolite comes with a small soft carrying case, with pockets inside for accessories. The best thing is that the unit itself is so small and flat that it will fit easily in a pocket. It’s very convenient and easy to use.
The design of this unit looks great while not drawing attention to the fact that it’s a vaporizer. You can hold it in a hand and it will look something like a nice cell phone case. Many forums used to compare the Iolite Vaporizer to a walkie talkie, until the DaVinci vaporizer (check out the review here)was released which looks even more like a real walkie talkie. There’s very little odor from the botanicals, and as long as you use purified butane that won’t produce an odor either. Since the unit only vaporizes at 190 degrees Celsius odor generation is pretty low (if you like to read more about Vaporizers and the smell they leave behind follow the link). The only issue the iolite has when it comes to discreetness is that it will hiss very quietly when it is going through a heating cycle.
Compatible with ZEUS Iceborn
This vaporizer is compatible with the ZEUS Iceborn, a revolutionary new vapor cooling system engineered by Canadian vape manufacturer ZEUSArsenal. The Iceborn is designed to produce cooler draws and bigger clouds when connected to your vaporizer. The vapour produced is ultra smooth and crisp and because of ice cooling, instead of water filtration, there is no loss of efficiency. The ZEUS Iceborn adds an additional 2 points to the vapor quality score of this vaporizer and is a highly recommended vaporizer accessory.
Don’t immediately write off butane powered units when you’re looking for a vaporizer. The Iolite doesn’t produce much odors, and the butane just makes the unit more portable. If your main priority is portability and discreetness, or you want a unit you can easily take on long trips, this is definitely a good choice. If you are worried about the higher than average defect rate, we have you covered for the first 30 days and the manufacturer handles the next two years. It’s also very stylish, and really efficient for a portable.
