Smok Mico Kit Review – Pods, Pods, Everywhere a Pod

Updated: September 26, 2022
Despite the massive influx of new devices into the pod-style vaping space, one could easily argue that the entire industry is starting to feel a little stale. Devices are starting to feel like uninspired rehashes of one another making it harder for newbies to vaping when it comes to selecting their first quality kit.  These reasons are why the Smok Mico is such a breath of fresh air. Everything from its unique looks to the surprising wattage performance it outputs (at least on paper). So now let’s dig a little deeper and see if there really is a reason to get excited with the Smok Mico.

Smok Mico Review

Manufacturing Quality

One could say that the pod-style vaporizer industry at this point has pretty much established its own defacto standards on what your typical pod-style device should look like.

Juul popularized the USB drive-like aesthetic while others like the Slice opted for similar yet still conventional designs in the size and shape of your everyday car key FOBS. The Smok Mico takes a different approach with its squarish design almost perfectly resembling your average zippo lighter.

What truly sets the Smok Mico apart though from the rest of the competition is its build quality. Most manufacturers, in their efforts to keep costs and overall weight low, opt for plastic materials for the main chassis of their devices.

Smok is having none of that though, evidenced by the Smok Mico and its rigid and premium feeling zinc alloy body giving the device a surprising amount of heft despite its compact and small form factor design.Smok Mico available colors

Given the small dimensions of the device, it’s understandable that doesn’t feature any onboard LED display or even buttons for that matter which makes sense in this case as the Smok Mico is 100% operated by an air-activated sensor that automatically fires up the device as soon you inhale from the mouthpiece.

Unlike other draw-activated pod devices though, the Smok Mico features a dedicated on/off switch which is something we’ve been waiting on for a long time at least as far as pod-style devices are concerned.

Flavour Quality

Despite its diminutive size, one would be tempted to think that the Smok Mico doesn’t offer a lot in terms of raw wattage or vaping power.  That couldn’t be further from the truth however as the Smok Mico packs a surprising amount of power in spite of its tiny footprint, offering lots of flavour and vapor with every puff.

Although vapor production doesn’t really come close to the performance of true-blue sub-ohm kits, the Smok Mico does manage to outstrip most of its competition, the popular Pax Juul included when considering how much flavour and vapor we were able to get out of this kit. It reminds us a lot of the Smok Novo.

While we were more than pleased with the flavour quality of the Smok Mico, in typical Smok fashion, there’s always a downside which in this case is the sometimes shoddy quality control where the coils are concerned.  One out of ten coils that were sampled with the Smok Mico turned out to be duds meaning that they failed to wick e-liquid properly or simply didn’t produce good flavour no matter what we tried.

While the Smok Mico might not have advanced features such as variable wattage or temperature control, it does have a few neat surprises hidden up its sleeve which some power users might appreciate. For starters, the Smok Mico supports up to three distinct coil types, each with their own rated resistance.

The kit includes two coils comprised of a standard 1.0-ohm coil which works best at providing the standard vanilla experience that most users can expect from a compact and relatively low-powered device.

The 2nd coil that comes with the kit is the one that offers a bit of a surprise; rated at 0.8 ohms and constructed with a mesh design, this makes the Smok Mico into one of the smallest sub-ohm devices you can get your hands on in the market today.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to test out the third coil which uses a ceramic construction and offers a higher resistance rating at 1.4 ohms so we can’t really give judgment on how that performs.Smok Mico tank detached

One aspect about the Smok Mico that we particularly enjoyed is the simple charge, fill, and fire approach. The coil assembly of the Smok Mico which is comprised of the tank, coil, and mouthpiece conveniently pulls apart from the main body of the device for easy refilling.

While the tank might not hold as much e-liquid as other devices with its maximum capacity of 1.7ml, refilling it is easy enough thanks to the side filling port as opposed to a bottom filling port which is used by most other devices.

When it comes to the operation of the Smok Mico, even beginners should have no problem jumping straight into the action thanks to the lack of convoluted functions available.

Simply charge the device up via the included micro USB cable, fill the tank up with your e-liquid of choice, let the e-liquid sit in the tank for  5 minutes to allow the coil to saturate itself with e-liquid, turn on the device via the toggle switch, and you’re good to go.

Portability

Within its power bracket,  we can confidently say that the Smok Mico is one of the smallest devices available, with exception to the Pax Juul and other similarly designed devices which use much smaller batteries and tend to produce much less vapor and flavor.

With the dimensions of the Smok Mico measuring out to a mere 56.3mm * 46.5mm * 14.8mm (height/width/depth), it easily slips into any sized pocket regardless of how tight your jeans might be. In addition, the kit even comes with a lanyard which can be used in tandem with the Smok Mico, further increasing its potential portability.

Last but definitely not the least, the Smok Mico uses an integrated and surprisingly powerful 700mAh battery which easily outstrips the battery power of any other device in its size class. Getting a full day of vaping out the Smok Mico is no issue, and in some cases depending on your usage, the battery can even be stretched to two whole days which speaks a lot for its capability as a portable device.Smok Mico back side

Overall Experience

While Smok has recently acquired a reputation for releasing rather lackluster and uninspiring designs for their devices, the Smok Mico just be the device to herald a renaissance for this well-known vaping giant.

With its compact form factor, unique aesthetics, and relatively powerful battery and vaping performance, those looking for a new, portable, and easy to use device should find a lot to like about the Smok Mico.
