Wax pens have been growing in popularity and we have seen a slew of new companies toss their hats into the wax pen ring. Today we will be taking a look at a popular unit from fresh on the scene manufacturer “This Thing Rips!”. The StoK R2 Series from This Thing Rips! features a single wrapped ceramic coil to provide users with almost instant vapor production from their waxes and concentrates. Having seen so many wax pens with this set-up we are a bit skeptical that this wax pen will offer us a fresh take on vaping waxes. Also if this is your first time purchasing a wax pen, be sure to check out our Wax Pen Buyers Guide which is full of helpful tips of what to look for when purchasing your first pen.
Review: This Thing Rips! StoK R2 Series Wax Pen
There is nothing new when it comes to loading this wax pen, simply remove the mouthpiece/vapor path to reveal the coiled heating chamber and using the applicator tool apply a small amount of wax directly to the coil. Be sure not to touch the coil with the tool as it may damage it and render your new unit useless.
Once the chamber is loaded, reattach the vapor path and mouthpiece and turn the wax pen on. To turn the unit on, just like almost every other wax pen, press the power button on the battery 5 times quickly.
The LED around the button will blink to signify it is turned on. Now you are ready to start taking draws, press the power button at the same time as you draw from the mouthpiece to enjoy your vapor.
Unfortunately the StoK R2 does not have any type of temperature or voltage controls to customize your session.
This forces you to control the temperature manually by changing the length that you hold the power button during your draw.
With so many other wax pens incorporating temperature control we really feel like “This Thing Rips!” missed the boat on this aspect. It really does not give users much customization on how they can enjoy their vapor.
As we mentioned the Stok R2 is locked to a single temperature setting which does not give users much flexibility with how they can enjoy their vapor. The coil on the StoK R gets red hot in just 1-2 seconds so we can only assume the temperature output is rather high.
This assumption was confirmed when we took a few draws from the Stok R and were met with really thick, harsh vapor. This unit is geared towards those who are looking to achieve maximum vapor production, but in doing so it lacks the smooth and subtle flavors that are locked away in your wax.
Higher temperatures with waxes can really irritate your throat and lungs and send you into a massive coughing fit, which happened immediately after taking a draw from the StoK R.
In order to get a smoother draw we had to hold the power button down for just a few seconds, pulsing the button as we drew to keep the temperature down. In all honesty if we are locked to just a single temperature we would much prefer a unit like the ZEUS Thunder 2, which features a ceramic plate atomizer and a lower set temperature to provide much smoother, full flavored, and efficient draws.
The Stok R2 appears to be a flashy unit from a distance, it has a unique neon colored vapor path that makes the unit pop to the naked eye.
However once you get past the glossy exterior there really is nothing special about this unit. The atomizer is your run-of-the-mill ceramic rod wrapped with a metal coil, the coil did not turn bluish purple when heated which means they are not using titanium, which is a more trusted heating material and is found in high end units like the Source Orb 4.
The aforementioned neon-vapor path is made out of food-grade plastic, which is less than ideal as it can be exposed to extremely high temperatures. Seeing as almost every other wax pen company uses some type of glass or metal for their vapor path, the choice to go with plastic is a bit of a head-scratcher. Sure it looks great but I would not want to use this pen for more than a quick draw or two.
The Stok R uses the same 650mah EGO battery that every other wax pen on the market uses, so don’t expect anything but an average battery life from this unit. We actually found the StoK R seemed to die more quickly than other pens like the Linx Hypnos Zero, most likely due to the rather high voltage output.
The charger for the battery feels extremely cheap and we would honestly worry about the charger failing before the unit ever fails. But no worries, seeing as the charger is a generic 510 threaded charger finding a replacement should be fairly easy.
This unit is shaped like a pen and they even provide a “pen cap” for the unit to protect the vapor path and mouthpiece while transporting.
With the pen cap attached you would be hard pressed to tell if what you were looking at is a vaporizer and not a pen. The device fits easily into your pocket or purse for easy transportation.
The one shining aspect of the StoK R isn’t even the pen itself, but rather the concentrate container that it comes with. The concentrate container features a bunch of ridges around the lip that help the lid lock into place to keep your concentrates secure. We wish they put this amount of effort into their wax pen rather than the container.
The Stok R2 Series is a perfect example of fashion over function. Sure the wax pen looks really slick and cool, but underneath the hood is generic technology that we have seen in the marketplace for a few years already. Vapor may be abundant because of the high temperature setting of the device, but vapor also tends to be harsh and severely lacking in flavor profile.
If you are serious about waxes we highly suggest checking out the Source Orb 4 premium kit which comes packed with 6 atomizers to provide a unique session every time.
If you are looking for an introductory unit, the ZEUS Thunder 2 is a perfect starting point for any connoisseur interested in exploring waxes. The ceramic plate atomizer is far more efficient than the Stok R2 and vapor is smooth and full of flavor.
