Uwell Caliburn Review – Caliburning Loins

When considering first impressions, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any differences when comparing the Uwell Caliburn to other devices in its category.  It shares the same quality aluminum chassis that the Juul uses while also matching its overall dimensions which is a huge mark in its favor considering how impressively compact the Juul was.

While the Uwell Caliburn might share a lot of similarities with the Juul in terms of aesthetics, there are definite and notable differences between the two which make the Uwell Caliburn ahead of its competition.

The first feature that sets the Uwell Caliburn apart is its use of a dual firing mechanism. While not unique or one-of-a-kind in the vaping industry, it’s still a definite rarity.

Having the luxury of firing the device up via the draw activated firing sensor or the physical firing button located on the side of the device is well appreciated in this case. The firing button feels sturdy enough and doesn’t show any symptoms of the annoying wobble that usually accompanies lower quality buttons.

The mouthpiece which easily comes apart from the base of the device thanks to a magnetic assembly offers a comfortable mouthfeel thanks to its ergonomic shape. In addition, it also does a good job of insulating heat away from your lips.

Another notable advantage that the Uwell Caliburn holds over its main competitor, the Juul is its usage of a non-proprietary micro USB charging port which gives you a  good amount of flexibility when it comes to charging your device. Users who are interested in 510 thread cartridges for oil often prefer the Tronian Pitron.

Given that the Uwell Caliburn is the company’s first foray into the world of pod-style vaping, it manages to pull off some surprising metrics where flavour and vapor production is a concern. Uwell’s own Pro-FOCS coils make their debut here.

Rated with a resistance of 1.4-ohms, the included coils look to be geared towards MTL (mouth-to-lung) users. First impressions reveal that the dual side mounted airflow slots feel restrictive enough to provide a genuine MTL experience that most newly transitioned vapers will feel familiar with.

As for the actual flavour and vapor quality, the Uwell Caliburn does a good job of matching the performance of the Juul although we have noticed that the Uwell Caliburn does have a slight lead when it comes to the actual volume of vapor produced per puff. In addition, the Uwell Caliburn, like the Slice, also uses refillable pods which might sound like an unfamiliar concept for long time users of the Juul which necessitates the purchase of pre-filled pods, increasing the overall cost of use over time.

While the Uwell Caliburn, on the other hand, can be used with virtually any type of e-liquid, we strongly recommend nicotine salt e-liquid as the low wattage of the Uwell Caliburn tends to fall short when using regular freebase nicotine solutions. All in all, we’re pretty happy with the flavours that we were able to get out of the Uwell Caliburn. People who use 510 cartridges tend to prefer the CCELL Silo.

Ease of Use

Most pod-style rely on similar mechanisms to where filling the pod is concerned but the Uwell Caliburn makes a small but well-appreciated refinement to the process resulting in a much more user-friendly experience. To be specific, the Uwell Caliburn features a top-fill system wherein the drip tip also acts as the port cover for the pod.

What this means, in the long run, is that you no longer have to remove the pod from the base kit to perform a refill (which most other devices require thanks to the fill port being located at the bottom). This also makes each and every one of the Uwell Caliburn’s pods a lot less prone to leaking.

The Uwell Caliburn also shines thanks to its implementation of both a physical button and a draw activated firing sensor to activate the device, giving you more options where controlling the way you vape is concerned.

It’s no secret that the Uwell Caliburn doesn’t break any boundaries in the design department thanks to its aesthetics being directly inspired by the Pax Juul down to its very bones.  What makes it shine however is a short but well thought out list of improvements that make it superior to practically every other pod-style device in its size category.

While the internal battery isn’t necessarily ground-breaking, it manages to eke out a respectable amount of vaping power for one day. All in all, its solid and reliable performance make it a great option for any potential or veteran vaper looking for a compact yet well-performing little kit.
