Vaporizers used with lighters are pretty rare, but they have their advantages. They don’t require chargers, and you can use them anywhere. The Vaporgenie ($59-$75) has been around for a while, and it’s a neat little portable that’s okay as a secondary unit but isn’t preferred by serious connoisseurs. The Pure Vapman from Switzerland uses a torch lighter and a much better heating system. This Swiss unit comes in two variations, the Pure and Mica style. Since the Pure style is cheaper ($89) we will primarily be comparing that unit in this review. So here is the comparison review of the Pure Vapman vs Vaporgenie Vaporizer.

This unit isn’t designed for anything but cheap portable vaporizing, so Vapor Quality is slightly below average. As long as you’re careful with the lighter flame, it will produce ok vapor, but its focus is on portability. The vapor tends to be mixed with the exhaust of the lighter, and the flavour is not really anything to be proud of. It’s such a basic unit that you can’t expect it to give great vapor quality, and it’s difficult to precisely adjust the mechanism. This unit is functional but the cheap price comes with drawbacks.
This Swiss portable vaporizer works by focusing a torch lighter onto the heating chamber. The torch light gives you a lot more control than the regular lighter used with the Vaporgenie. Also, you heat up the unit before you take draws, rather than at the same time so there is absolutely no flame exhaust that you will be inhaling. Flame exhaust is harmless and cigarette smokers have been inhaling it for decades, but it is not a pleasant taste. So with this unit you get more control over the quality of the vapor, so you can get it just the way you want. The design of the heating chamber also allows for more efficient use of your botanicals, and better flavour.
Winner: Vapman – By far better quality vapor. The Pure Vapman beats many unit that are priced higher, so the genie stands no chance.
This vape is so simple that it is very difficult to break it. The focus of the unit is on the silicon carbide ceramic filter, which keeps the flame from burning your botanicals. It’s very durable because of the solid oak body. It comes with a lifetime warranty, and none of the parts will really ever need replacing. I’m not hugely impressed with the design, but the new spiral hand carved version is pretty nice. The shape of the pipe makes it difficult to apply heat accurately and if you don’t have a proper lighter it can be a bit inconvenient.
The Vapman is handmade in Switzerland, with precisely shaped parts and the finest materials. What we really like, though, is the design. The shape of this vaporizer perfectly focuses the heat from your lighter onto the heating chamber while also looking great. It’s smaller than the Vaporgenie and still just as durable if you treat it right.
Winner: Vapman – precise craftsmanship, great design, much higher quality components (gold)
Both these units utilize lighters as the heat source. So the question is which system is easier to learn and adjust. Because you heat the Vapman before using it, it’s easier to see what you’re doing and control it. A jet flame lighter is much easier to manage than the moving flame of a regular lighter as well. The gold in the Vapman also helps in keeping the temperature even in the heating chamber. That’s why it’s definitely the winner in this category.
The Vaporgenie is very durable and fits well in a pocket. It emits very little odor and doesn’t have any small parts to worry about when taking it with you. The lighter system is always really portable, since you never have to worry about charging a battery. We recommend this kind of vaporizer for long camping trips. Because it works with a standard lighter, you can get replacements at any convenience store.
The Vapman looks delicate but in fact is very durable and well put together. It’s small enough for a pocket and comes in a protective case. It’s smaller than the Vaporgenie and therefore even more portable. You can take it on trips and the torch lighter will provide all the fuel you need. Since this portable vaporizer comes with a case, you can also take some botanical with you, so it gives the added advantage of only carrying around the case and a jet flame lighter, while with the Genie you would have to carry three things.
Winner: Vapman – smaller, lighter and comes with a case
The Genie looks just like an ordinary pipe, so it’s really not very discreet, especially if you get the brightly coloured ones. It emits average odor, but it is obvious that it’s a pipe. It is bigger than the Vapman and you have to draw on it while lighting the front. That makes it relatively indiscreet.
The portable vape comes in an airtight case and doesn’t look like a vaporizer. Unlike the Genie, it easily fits in your fist. It also emits very little odor. It’s not very discreet in use, since it takes both hands, but the advantage is that you heat it first and the draw from the unit. This means when you bring the unit up to draw from it there is really nothing that catches attention. It is only the heating process that is not the most discrete sight.
Winner: Vapman – smaller, less garish, heating and drawing are not done at the same time, airtight case contains odors
The Vapman is the definitive winner. Both these units start at less than a hundred dollars, but the Vapman is clearly a more developed, better designed unit. It gives you more control over the heating system because of the better design and that gives you the best vapor quality in its category. It’s a great tiny portable with far better control than most similar units have. The Vaporgenie works well as a backup vaporizer, for people that actually have a quality stationary vaporizer at home and just need something to be portable once and a while. The Pure style however is powerful and good enough to be your main portable vape.
