We refresh this list regularly (if new devices make the list). We are also constantly finding new ways to improve our testing, and I make sure those changes get explained here as well.

Over the past couple of years, we shifted our focus heavily towards making our testing process more objective, so we implemented the scientific method. Starting with the Benchmark Award System (explained below).

In more recent times, we noticed that it’s not only useful to know what a unit is best at but also what it’s not so good at. This is because the best e-rig for you isn’t just the one that delivers what you’re looking for. It’s almost as important to know if the unit’s trade-offs are something you are ok with.

Below, you’ll find a deep dive into these new concepts and why we prioritized them for the list.

The Benchmark Award System

Every team member who plays a part in putting devices to the test is a vaporizer enthusiast in their spare time. One of the first things we started noticing was that we never felt fully satisfied with a simple numerical ranking list. The reason is that e-rigs are much more diverse than one might think. A really good e-rig for me (I prefer flavor) might not even be in the top 5 for a user with different priorities than mine (if they prioritize portability, for example).

So rather than crowning a single overall winner, we pair scores with an award system that highlights each device’s strengths. That way, you can zero in on the one that fits what you actually care about without having to burn time and money testing them yourself.

3-Tiered Framework for Objective Rankings

1- Testing Framework

A- Scientific Process

Dr. Tscheka is primarily responsible for integrating the various parts of our testing to ensure the final score is as objective as possible. Dr. Tscheka uses his PhD background to constantly improve our framework and make sure it is always grounded in the scientific method.

B- Material Safety

Dr. Tscheka is also the first person to scope out any potential issues. He checks that the vaporizer fits the established regulations before we add it to the testing list.

This evaluation is part of our internal review process and is used mainly to inform our rankings. It does not constitute regulatory certification, and is not a substitute for safety approvals issued by regulatory agencies (such as the FDA, Health Canada, etc). If an e-rig appears unsafe during this review, it is no longer considered for the ranking, but its inclusion should not be interpreted as a guarantee of safety. We always recommend consulting a qualified healthcare professional when using any inhalation product.

C- Engineering Knowhow

Nima, our CEO, is a veteran vaporizer user and has been reviewing all sorts of vaporizers since 2009. He has directly influenced the cannabis vaporization space through relationships with top manufacturers and through the creation of Thermodyne System’s own vaporizer brands. He uses this knowledge to bridge the gap between the engineering team and us (the testing team). Nima helps us understand the engineering principles behind each device’s tradeoffs that make an e-rig unique.

Understanding these tradeoffs is very important for us to be able to accurately rank the e-rigs we test. With Nima’s engineering know-how, we can actually dissect what a device does well and call out when a manufacturer oversells a feature or points to the wrong strength entirely.

Nima also does his own teardowns of the units, fully disassembling each device to ensure we know exactly how it functions.

D- Real Testing – The Fun Part

This is the part where Kirill and I actually start using the units. After running through Nima and Dr. Tscheka’s technical data and engineering breakdown, we form our own subjective opinions through multiple session testing. We use the same criteria to rank the e-rig, but we let our own opinions weigh in. Kirill and I use e-rigs very differently, which works to our advantage because we cover multiple use cases. After sufficient testing, we align our rankings with the rest of the team’s and reach a final consensus.

Other tests are run using the scientific method, such as our Heat signature tests or vapor density experiments. These are designed to be easily replicable, ensuring the fewest possible factors vary and allowing our data to be used comparatively.

2- Customers’ Feedback

To ensure our rankings are complete, we test as many e-rigs as possible. The sheer amount of volume makes long-term testing complicated. So we work around it by leaning on our customers. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of people use the devices over time and share their experience with us through customer reviews. Good or bad.

Since 2025, our reviews have been managed by Trustpilot, an independent platform that manages reviews. This has proved extremely useful because if customers keep flagging the same issue with a particular e-rig, whether that’s a bubbler that cracks too easily or an app that keeps disconnecting, we take this feedback into consideration and downgrade its ranking. The opposite is also true, if a device performs better than we initially gave it credit for, we improve its score (within objective reason).

3- New Product Launches

When a more advanced new product launches, units with older technology may be downgraded in order to make space for the higher ratings for the more effective technology to stand out. We routinely update the numerical ratings of all devices during consensus rating meetings held every 6 months. This helps us keep the content and ratings comparable and evergreen, while new devices enter the ranking. We also carry and have tested the largest portfolio of vaporizers in the market, therefore we keep more on the list at any given time than many other rankings lists.

How to Choose the Right E-Rig

The first step to finding the right e-rig for you is understanding what it is you want from your unit. We reverse-engineered a few KEY questions that should point you in the right direction.

1- What do you want out of a session?

Almost every single time we ask this question, the answer seems to be high-quality vapor. But high quality can vary much more than you think from person to person. Some people consider higher quality sessions, the ones that simply push the most amount of vapor. Others assume that more flavor automatically means better quality.

These differences are very common, and because achieving both in the same device is very difficult, the first question you need to answer is: what vapor do you want for your sessions? If you could only choose one, do you prefer vapor thickness or flavor? Once that question is answered, the options become much clearer.

2. Desktop power or portable convenience?

This is a question that matters more for e-rigs than for almost any other vaporizer category. Unlike a dab pen, which is portable by definition, E Rigs are inherently slightly larger units, so they can range from handheld to carried only in a case. It’s important you are 100% honest here since most people overestimate how portable they need their e-rig to be. If it’s going to live on your coffee table and traveling with it is not in your plans, opting for a larger, more powerful unit is perfectly reasonable, and it’s usually where you’ll get the biggest clouds and the most consistent water filtration. If it’s actually going to be traveling in a backpack daily, a compact e-rig gives up some of that raw power, but makes up for it in convenience.

3. What concentrates do you use most?

If you are anything like me, you love smelling some wax and then vaporizing it in a quartz or glass chamber to get the absolute best taste possible. That’s why I look for units with lots of airflow, and very inert materials. Plastic and silicone in the vapor path are unacceptable. Now, some people like Kirill (on the team) don’t care for terpenes or flavor in general. He likes to rip units to the max and will vaporize most concentrates at the highest level he can get his hands on. For someone like that, a larger ceramic chamber can be a great fit, since the drawback of taste really doesn’t matter at all. Larger chambers, stronger heaters, and the ability to restrict airflow for thicker vapor become much more essential.

All in all, similarly to what type of vapor you’re looking for, the concentrates need to match that idea to ensure you are getting the most out of your dabs.

How We Test

Over the years, weve done hundreds, if not thousands, of reviews across all vaporizer categories. During this time, we’ve reworked, adjusted, and perfected our testing methodologies. The framework built by Dr. Tscheka is designed to expose each electric rig’s strengths and weaknesses (that come out in practise not on a spec sheet). Across these stages, we score every device against a set of performance specs, and the final ranking is determined by combining all those scores together.

Also, we recently added controlled experiments to the regular testing that Kirill and I do. These tests are then documented through our images. For example, how a bowl looks after heating at different temperatures. Or how hot the chamber actually gets when set at a specific temperature. The idea is to give users a real objective look into how the unit works rather than relying only on subjective experimental data.

Stage 1: Safety and Materials (Dr. Tscheka)

After a unit is verified by Dr. Tscheka, it is delivered to our office, where we begin by taking it apart. Because we own the devices we stock, we can fully dissect them. And in the first stage of testing, which involves Nima, Kirill, and me, we do just that. We start by opening the packages up and disassembling the device. What we are doing in this stage is simply looking at and fully understanding how the unit works and how it is built. We are searching for proper connections, isolated airpaths, and any off-gassing potential, among other things.

Stage 2: Engineering and Design (Nima)

Once an e-rig clears safety, Nima looks at it from the perspective of an engineer. With e-rigs, the heating system is the biggest factor, so many times its the main place where he spends his time. He focuses on breaking down how the chamber is designed, then judges how well those choices line up with what the e-rig is actually trying to do. A device sold on flavor that runs a hot exposed coil with is not going to back up the claim, and Nima is the one who calls that out. His read is based on design principles and technical data, not session feel, and his scores become the second set of numbers that feed the final consensus.

Stage 3: Real World Testing – (Mariano, Kirill)

This is the part where Kirill and I actually start putting the unit through a ton of sessions. We usually start with a relaxed day of casual use on CBD concentrate to get a baseline for how the device behaves. From there, we move on to the structured testing Dr. Tscheka outlined. We run the full temperature range and judge vapor quality on both flavor and density. We purposefully test different textured concentrates and write down any noteworthy differences. For the battery, we run the rig on a setting near the middle of its range and see how long the unit runs before turning off.

Maintenance is a big concern with E Rigs, so we pay special attention to how hard the unit is to maintain. Ease of use gets scored last, once we have lived with the e-rig long enough to know what owning it really feels like. These scores are more subjective than the first two stages, and that is on purpose.

Scientific Testing

To make sure that our rankings are actually useful, we made sure to add experimental data to our evaluations (through experiments). These experiments happen during the 3rd and final stage. We run these tests in controlled environments so that the data we produce can be used to compare devices. We accomplished this by creating testing sites in our office, where we test all devices under the same conditions.

Temperature Accuracy and Location Readings

The general idea for this experiment was to capture how accurate the temperature on each rig is. For this experiment, we bring the rigs to specific temperatures and then log the real temperature to see how much variance(in temperature) there is. All tests are done in the exact same way to ensure the results are fair.

1st – Accuracy: No unit can manage heat enough to keep a set temperature perfect during a full session, and all units run some degree of variance between the temperature they claim and the temperature the unit reliably reaches. But, we use this information to get an objective view of how well the unit actually holds its temperature. This is important because temperature accuracy is one of the clearest signs of a well-built e-rig.

2nd – Distribution: While temperature accuracy is very important, how that heat is distributed is equally so. A chamber that stays accurate is only good if that accuracy is consistent across the entire heating surface. That’s why we check and log the results of not just what temperature we see, but where that temperature is actually located.

Vapor Density Experiment

The objective of this experiment is to simulate a session and discover how dense the vapor produced by each vaporizer is when compared to the others. We maintain a rigid testing format that involves running an 8 second cycle at a low temperature (we aim for 220°C). We later reset the unit and repeat the same test at a higher temperature (we aim for 270°C). You can see this experiment at the end of the gallery for each of the top 10 units.

Wax Comparison Post Session

In this experiment, we want to give users a clear idea of what the chamber looks like after a short session. The idea here is to compare how well each E Rig vaporizes the concentrate after 3 draws(on low and high temps). We also follow a strict format here to ensure the results can be compared accurately. Each test lasts 28 seconds and consists of 3 draws. Each draw lasts 6 seconds with a 5-second pause in between. We repeat the test twice for each unit, once at 220°C and the other at 270°C.

Stage 4: Pricing Analysis (Whole Team)

Once a e-rig has cleared safety, engineering, and real-world testing, it goes through one final review where the whole team meets to set its final placement. We intentionally factor in price at the very end of the testing. We believe that price is very important, but we aim to do all our testing through the lens of performance first. Price doesn’t change performance, but it can make a unit rank better or worse, depending on how much value we believe the unit offers for its price.

That said, we do not put exact prices on the list, instead we sort them into budget, budget premium, and ultra premium. This keeps the list objective but still gives you enough information to make a call.

Value Over Brand

One thing we want to make clear is that we rank based on performance, not names. A rig from a company nobody’s heard of can outrank a market leader if it does the job better for less. Brand doesn’t buy placement on this list. Results do.

We don’t run affiliate links, so we don’t make more money from offering you a more expensive option.

That said, brand isn’t something we completely ignore either. Usually, known brands offer things that smaller brands simply cannot, such as better warranties and customer support. But a logo alone never outweighs how the rig actually performs.

Criteria We Consider When Ranking Electric Dab Rigs

When it comes to the actual ranking list, there are multiple factors that are important. Together with the team, we put together a set of core criteria that we consider cover all relevant factors.

Vapor Quality

Starting with arguably the most important factor, vapor quality. Now, vapor quality is an umbrella term since high vapor quality can look very different from person to person. That’s why we break down the term into 4 sub-criteria.

Terpene Expression

This tells us how well the unit is prepared to satisfy users who prioritize flavor. Terpenes are even more important with concentrates than almost any other form of consumption, since a lot of what you pay for in live resin, rosin, or sauce is that flavor profile.

Vapor Smoothness

What we are looking for here is how smooth or harsh the vapor feels, especially on back to back dabs. This factor is purely subjective and based on our own testing data.

Particle Size and Parts Per Million

Here, we look at particle size and density in your vapor. Put simply, bigger particles, or larger concentrations of particles, are the reason why vapor feels harsh. Larger, denser particles are harder for your airways to clear, since your body treats them as something to push back out through the mucus. Your body disposes of particles through a process called mucociliary clearance that is well documented in this peer-reviewed research.

Vapor temperature

This measures how hot the vapor is by the time it reaches your mouth. E-rigs generally have an advantage over dab pens here, since water filtration cools the vapor on its way through, but that advantage disappears quickly if the percolator is poorly designed or the vapor path between the chamber and the water is too short.

Manufacturing Quality

E Rigs are very modular in design. What I mean to say is that they are usually a handful of separate units that can be put together to create the entire Rig setup. What we believe is important when it comes to manufacturing quality is how well those pieces were designed to work together as one system.

Each piece is considered separately: heating chamber, glass piece, body, airpath, carb caps, etc. But in the final score, we are including how well we believe each part fits into the overall system.

Temperature Flexibility

Recovery Time and Heat Retention

The first thing we look into is how well the unit maintains its set temperature during and after a dab. Every hit pulls heat out of the heating chamber, and how quickly and accurately it does determines how well the unit is calibrated. A rig that manages this trade-off well gives you consistent hits back to back instead of a strong first dab followed by a weaker second one.

The Illusion of Control

A rig with fifteen preset temperatures sounds more capable than one with five, but presets only matter if the unit can actually hold each one steady. We’ve tested units that offer a wide spread of options on paper, but drift several degrees the moment the chamber is under load. A rig with fewer presets that holds each one tightly gives you control that you can actually use to manage your sessions. We take this into consideration when ranking all E Rigs.

Battery Life

Battery life is a metric that is usually seen as a number. In our testing, we see battery life more as how many full sessions can I get out of a full charge. How convenient is the unit, and does the battery life make it easier or harder to use? Tradeoffs are key here. Usually, anytime a manufacturer wants to cheapen a unit, the battery is the first thing to get sacrificed. Our job here is to ensure we actually check how long it runs, rather than just relying on the mAh capacity.

Portability and Discreetness

E Rigs aren’t necessarily known for being portable the same way 510 batteries and dab pens are. Still, we benefit greatly from compact, convenient setups, even when we aren’t looking to take them out on hiking trips and such. Just being able to comfortably hold and store an E Rig holds weight in our ranking. In some cases, the unit is specifically designed to be portable, and in those cases, we focus extra hard on checking how well the unit actually performs in this realm. A unit that is smaller, but performs half as well, might not actually be a better portable for someone who values vapor quality. That’s why we consider portability in our ranking.

Ease of Use and Maintenance

Ease of use is important to us because an easy unit to setup and maintain will usually end up being used more than a fancy but complex unit. We focus here on how intuitive the controls are, whether maintenance is a hassle, and how quickly you can get from start to finish in your session.

Value for Money

Price on its own isn’t enough to tell you how good a unit is. What matters is how well the rig delivers relative to what it costs. Every unit gets weighed against others in and around its price bracket rather than judged on its number alone. A rig that costs more should perform better because of that cost, not just because a bigger name is attached to it.

This is where a lot of units lose ground. A flagship might edge out a mid-range rig by a small margin on vapor quality or recovery time, but if that margin doesn’t come close to matching the price gap between them, the mid-range unit is the better value device.

Transparency and Organizational Disclosure

TVape is not only a review team. We also design and sell our own vaporizers. Our in-house brands include Utillian, Tronian, Zeus, and LITL, and you will have noticed Utillian and Tronian pens on this list sitting alongside everyone else’s.

A company ranking devices it profits from has an obvious reason to favor its own, so here is how we keep that in check. Our E Rigs go through the same process as every other device on this list. Same safety gate from Clemens, same engineering breakdown from Nima, same real-world and scientific testing, same scoring. They do not skip a stage, and they are not handed a spot. When one of our units has a weakness, it goes in the write-up the same way it would for anyone else.

We started making E Rigs after noticing that the same gaps keep coming up, so we built ones that close them.

Two things keep us honest. We do not use affiliate links, so we earn no commission on any unit we rank, ours or anyone else’s, and there is no version of this list where favoring one device pays us more. And our customer feedback lives on Trustpilot, which we cannot directly influence.

About the Author

My name is Mariano Bustamante, and I lead the wax vaporizer testing team at TVape.
