We refresh this list regularly (if new devices make it to the list). We are also constantly finding new ways to improve our testing, and I ensure those changes get explained here as well.

Over the past couple of years, we shifted our focus heavily towards making our testing process as objective as possible. Starting with the Benchmark Award System (explained below).

In more recent times, we noticed that it’s not only useful to know what a unit is best at but also what it’s not so good at. This is because the best vaporizer for you is the one that nails your top priority, while balancing the trade-offs with criteria you are ok with.

Below, you’ll find a deep dive into these new concepts and why we prioritized these changes to the list.

The Benchmark Award System

Every team member who plays a part in putting devices to the test and therefore making this list possible are cannabis vaporizer users in their spare time. One of the first things we started noticing was that we never felt fully satisfied with a simple 1-25 list. The reason is that vaporizers are much more diverse than one might think. A really good vaporizer for me (I mainly use vaporizers for flavor) hasn’t even made the top 3 for another team member like Kirill (who mainly looks for as much vapor as possible).

So rather than crowning a single overall winner, we pair scores with an award system that highlights each device’s strengths. That way, you can zero in on the one that fits what you actually care about without having to burn time and money testing them yourself.

3-Tiered Framework for Objective Rankings

1- Testing Framework

A- Scientific Process

Dr. Tscheka is primarily responsible for integrating the various parts of our testing to ensure the final score is as objective as possible. Dr. Tscheka applies his PhD (Pharmaceutical Technology) background to ensure the framework is grounded in the scientific method.

B- Material Safety

Dr. Tscheka also ensures the materials used in the vapor path and heated areas are safe and properly isolated from the electronics. We use our own engineering department, which provides the tools and resources to properly dissect and understand these vaporizers and how they really work.

This evaluation is part of our internal review process and is used mainly to inform our rankings. It does not constitute regulatory certification, and is not a substitute for safety approvals issued by regulatory agencies (such as the FDA, Health Canada, etc). If a vaporizer raises concerns during this review, it stops being considered for the ranking, but its inclusion should not be interpreted as a guarantee of safety. We always recommend consulting a qualified healthcare professional when using any inhalation product.

C- Engineering Knowhow

Nima, our CEO, is a veteran vaporizer user and has been reviewing all sorts of vaporizers since 2009. He has directly influenced the cannabis vaporization space through relationships with top manufacturers and through the creation of Thermodyne System’s own vaporizer brands. He uses this knowledge to bridge the gap between the engineering team and us (the testing team). Nima helps us understand the engineering principles behind each device’s tradeoffs that make a vaporizer unique.

Understanding these tradeoffs is essential for us to properly rank the vaporizers we test. With Nima’s engineering know-how, we can accurately dissect what a device does well and call out when a manufacturer is overselling a feature or pointing to the wrong strength entirely.

Nima also does his own teardowns of the units, fully disassembling each device to ensure we know exactly how it functions.

D- Real Testing – The Fun Part

This is the part where Kirill and I actually start using the units. After running through Nima and Dr. Tscheka’s technical data and engineering breakdown, we form our own subjective opinions through multiple session testing. We use the same 8 criteria to rank the vaporizer, but we let our own opinions weigh in. Kirill and I use vaporizers very differently, which works to our advantage because we cover multiple use cases. After sufficient testing, we align our rankings with the rest of the team’s and reach a final consensus.

Other tests are run using the scientific method, such as our Heat signature tests or vapor density experiments. These are designed in a way that is easily replicable to ensure that the least amount of factors vary, and our data can be used comparatively for this reason.

2- Customers’ Feedback

To ensure our rankings are complete, we test as many vaporizers as possible. The sheer amount of volume makes long-term testing complicated. So we work around it by leaning on our customers. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of people use the devices over time and share their experience with us through customer reviews. Good or bad.

Since 2025, our reviews have been managed by Trustpilot, an independent platform that manages reviews. This has proved extremely useful because if customers keep flagging the same issue with a particular vaporizer, we take this feedback into consideration and downgrade its ranking. The opposite is also true, if a device performs better than we initially gave it credit for, we improve its score(within objective reason).

3- New Product Launches

When a more advanced new product launches, units with older technology may be downgraded in order to make space for the higher ratings for the more effective technology to stand out. We routinely update the numerical ratings of all devices during consensus rating meetings held every 6 months. This helps us keep the content and ratings comparable and evergreen, while new devices enter the ranking. We also carry and have tested the largest portfolio of vaporizers in the market, therefore we keep more on the list at any given time than many other rankings lists.

How to Choose the Right Dab Pen

The first step to finding the right dab pen for you is understanding what it is you want from your unit. Usually, there are a few direct questions you need to answer to fully understand what type of device you’re looking for.

1- What do you want out of a session?

I’m sure that if anyone were to answer this, their first answer will be “high quality vapor” nine out of ten times. But high quality can vary much more than you think from person to person. Some people consider higher quality sessions, the ones that simply push the most amount of vapor. Others assume that more flavor automatically means better quality.

These differences are very common, and because achieving both in the same device is very difficult, the first question you need to answer is: what vapor do you want for your sessions? If you could only choose one, do you prefer vapor thickness or flavor. Once that question is answered, the options become much clearer.

2. Where and how will you use the device?

The previous question will leave you with a good understanding of what type of heating, build quality, and price range you will likely need to search in. But, another very important factor to consider is where you will use the unit the most.

It’s important you are 100% honest here since most people overestimate how portable they need their vape to be. If it’s going to live on your coffee table and traveling with it is not in your plans, opting for a slightly larger unit might be perfectly reasonable. If it’s actually going to be traveling in a pocket or backpack daily, then this is one of the main factors you should consider.

3. What concentrates do you use most?

If you are anything like me, you love smelling some wax and then vaporizing it in a quartz or glass bowl to get the absolute best taste possible. That’s why I look for units with lots of airflow, and very inert materials. Plastic and silicone in the vapor path are unacceptable. Now, some people like Kirill (on the team) dont care for terpenes, or flavor in general. He likes to rip units to the max, and will vaporize most concentrates at the highest level he can get his hands on. For someone like that, silicone can be a great material because it keeps things cool, and the drawback of taste really doesn’t matter at all. Larger chambers, stronger heaters, and the ability to restrict airflow for thicker vapor become much more essential.

All in all, similarly to what type of vapor you’re looking for, the concentrates need to match that idea to ensure you are getting the most out of your dabs.

How We Test

Over the years, weve done hundreds, if not thousands, of reviews across all vaporizer categories. During this time, we’ve reworked, adjusted, and perfected our testing methodologies. As I mentioned earlier, the framework Dr. Tscheka built is designed to surface each pen’s real strengths and weaknesses. Across these stages, we score every device on the same performance specs, and the final ranking comes from putting all of those perspectives together.

Also, we recently added controlled experiments to the mix, such as temperature readings with a thermal camera and vapor density tests using a pump system to simulate a session. We also run various tests and show the results in the images of each device ranking. For example, how a bowl looks after heating at different temperatures.

Stage 1: Safety and Materials (Dr. Tscheka)

After a unit is verified by Dr. Tscheka, it is delivered to our office, where we begin by taking it apart. Because we own the devices we stock, we can fully dissect them. And in the first stage of testing, which involves Nima, Kirill, and myself, we do just that. We start by opening the packages up and disassembling the device. What we are doing in this stage is simply looking at and fully understanding how the unit works and how it is built. We are searching for proper connections, isolated airpaths, and any offgassing potential, among other things.

Stage 2: Engineering and Design (Nima)

Once a pen clears safety, Nima looks at it as an engineer. With dab pens, atomizers are a huge factor, so this is where a lot of the most attention goes. He breaks down the chamber design, the coil or coil-less setup, the airflow, and the materials, then judges how well those choices line up with what the pen is actually trying to do. A pen sold on flavor that runs a hot exposed coil is not going to back up the claim, and Nima is the one who calls that out. His read is based on design principles and technical data, not session feel, and his scores become the second set of numbers that feed the final consensus.

Stage 3: Real World Testing – (Mariano, Kirill)

After a pen passes the first two stages, Kirill and I actually put it to the test through usage. We start with a relaxed day of casual use on CBD concentrate to get a baseline for how the pen behaves. From there, we move on to the structured testing Dr. Tscheka outlined. We run the full temperature range and judge vapor quality on both flavor and density. We purposefully test different textured concentrates and write down any noteworthy differences. For the battery, we run the pen down on a setting near the middle of its range and count the sessions. Maintenance is a big one with concentrates, so we track reclaim buildup, how easy the chamber and vapor path are to clean. Ease of use gets scored last, once we have lived with the pen long enough to know what owning it really feels like. These scores are more subjective than the first two stages, and that is on purpose.

Scientific Testing

During this stage, we run structured testing in controlled environments so that the data we produce can actually be used to compare between devices. We accomplished this by creating testing sites in our office (we call it “the lab”), where we test all devices under the same conditions. For our experiments, we use a pump instead of a person to ensure that the testing conditions remain fair.

Temperature Accuracy and Location Readings

We bring each pen as close to 270°C as it allows, precise units exactly, preset units to the nearest setting, and coil units by heating up and letting them settle until the camera reads 270°C. Then we check two things.

1st – Accuracy: Most units run a 10 to 20 degree variance, worse on cheaper ones, and getting a pen to read true and then hold that temperature consistently is genuinely hard. It is one of the clearest signs of a well-built device, and it matters most on premium units, since experienced users depend on that temperature being right.

2nd – Distribution: When the pen does hit 270°C, is the heat even across the coil or bucket, or are there hot spots? If the temperature inside the chamber varies, you get uneven vaporization and inconsistent sessions.

Vapor Density Experiment

The objective of this experiment is to simulate a session and discover how dense the vapor produced by each vaporizer is when compared to the others. We maintain a rigid testing format that involves running a 8 second cycle at a low temperature(we aim for 220°C). We later reset the unit and repeat the same test at a higher temperature (we aim for 270°C).

You can see this experiment at the end of the gallery of each unit in the top 10 units.

Wax Comparison Post Session

In this experiment, we want to give users a clear idea of what the chamber looks like after a short session. The idea here is to compare how well each unit vaporizes the concentrate after 3 draws(on low and high temps).

We also follow a strict format here to ensure the results can be compared accurately. Each test lasts 28 seconds and consists of 3 draws. Each draw lasts 6 seconds with a 5-second pause in between. We repeat the test twice for each unit, once at 220°C and the other at 270°C.

Stage 4: Pricing Analysis (Whole Team)

Once a dab pen has cleared safety, engineering, and real-world testing, it goes through one final review where the whole team meets to set its final placement. Price is the last thing we factor in, and that is intentional.

Why Price Comes Last

A lot of the pens we test are prototypes or pre-launch units, so there often is not a real price to work with during the first three stages anyway. Even when there is, we want the testing scores to stay honest, so the team rates on performance alone first. By the time we reach consensus the performance is clear, and price becomes the final layer that decides where a pen lands next to its competition. We do not put exact prices on the list, but we sort pens into Budget, Budget Premium, and Ultra Premium tiers, which keeps the list accurate and still gives you enough to make a call.

Value Over Brand

Once a device covers the fundamentals, smooth heat, clean vapor, and a chamber that holds up, the gains above that get smaller while the price keeps climbing, often on the strength of the brand alone. A lesser-known pen that nails the basics will frequently land within reach of a flagship that costs far more. So when that happens in testing, we rank the cheaper pen right alongside the big name instead of below it.

That outcome is rare on most ranking pages, and it is worth being clear about why. Most best of lists in this space run on affiliate commissions, and pricier units tend to pay out more, so there is a built-in reason to push expensive pens to the top, whether they have earned it or not. We do not use affiliate links, and we do not earn a commission on what you buy, which means we have no reason to rank a pen any higher than it deserves.

Brand is not nothing. A known name usually means better warranty coverage and longer term support, and we factor that in. But a logo on its own does not move a pen up our list. Every device we test starts on the same footing, and where it ends up is decided by how it performs, not by who made it.

Criteria We Consider When Ranking Dab Pens

Vapor Quality

Vapor quality is the criterion most people care about, so we go deeper here than on the others. Before any single score is assigned, we consider these 4 sub-criteria.

Terpene Expression

This tells us how well the chamber holds onto the flavor profile of the concentrate across the temperature range. Terpenes matter more with concentrates than almost anywhere else, since a lot of what you pay for in live resin, rosin, or sauce is that flavor profile. A chamber that runs too hot or too unevenly flattens those terpenes early in the dab, making the rest of the session flavorless or even harsh. This is where coil-less ceramic and glass chambers tend to pull ahead, and where hot exposed coils tend to fall behind.

Vapor Smoothness

This measures how smooth or harsh the vapor feels, which decides how comfortable a session is, especially on back to back dabs. Concentrates can hit harshly when a pen runs hot, so a device that stays smooth across a full session scores higher here.

Particle Size and Parts Per Million

Here we look at how fine or dense the particles in the vapor are, because that directly affects how the vapor feels when it reaches your lungs. Larger, denser particles are harder for your airways to clear, since your body treats them as something to push back out through the mucus and tiny hair like structures(called Cilia) lining your airways. Your body disposes of particles through a process called mucociliary clearance that is well documented in this peer-reviewed research.

Vapor temperature

This measures how hot the vapor is by the time it reaches your mouth. It matters more on dab pens than on most devices, because concentrates run hot and many pens have a short vapor path with little room to cool things down.

When these come together, we land on a single Vapor Quality score.

Manufacturing Quality

Manufacturing quality is about how well the physical build aligns with what the pen aims to be, and it goes beyond just durability. With a dab pen this overlaps heavily with material safety, because the atomizer and vapor path are in direct contact with everything you inhale for the most part.

This is where Clemens and Nima’s work directly feeds into the ranking. Clemens judges whether the chamber and vapor path materials are appropriate and properly isolated, and Nima judges whether the engineering choices behind them make sense for the kind of pen it is. We are also watching for the small things that fail first on concentrate devices, like threading that gunk up, magnetic connections that loosen, and how well the device feels in use during multiple sessions.

Temperature Flexibility

Temperature plays a huge role in overall vapor quality and session control, but there are a few factors we consider.

Temperature Range & Vaporization Spectrum

The first piece is the range itself, since concentrates vaporize across a wider range than herbs. The low end is where flavor and terpenes live, which is what you want for solventless like rosin, or for terp-heavy live resin. The high end is where density lives. A pen that covers the full spectrum well is rare, because doing both ends justice is genuinely difficult and one of the clearest signs of a well-built device.

Temperature Accuracy and Tolerance

To be able to ensure that everything else works well, we don’t just look at what temperatures the manufacturer describes. The reason being is that every dab pen runs with some gap between the temperature it claims and what the chamber actually reaches. How wide that gap is tells us a lot about the engineering, and it is exactly what our thermal images measure. A tight tolerance takes more precise, more expensive components(sensors). It is especially important as you move towards higher-quality or premium (more expensive) units.

The Illusion of Control

A cheap dab pen with single degree steps and a loose tolerance looks precise on a spec sheet, but those steps mean little when the actual temperature doesnt align with the set temperature. A pen with a few honest(accurate) presets, and a tight tolerance gives you more real control over your session.

Battery Life

With concentrates, battery life is less about hours of runtime and more about how many dabs you get before the pen dies, since sessions are short and frequent. We also weigh whether the battery fits how the pen is meant to be used. A 3D chamber draws more power than a simple coil, so that gets taken into consideration as well. Practical details count too, like pass-through charging, replaceable batteries, and an accurate charge indicator, because a unit that is not accurate with how much battery is left will become frustrating, no matter how long it really lasts.

Portability and Discreetness

Every dab pen is technically portable because the category demands a battery setup which can be moved. Now, there are very real differences between dab pens due to their form factors and feature sets. A slim pen-style unit disappears into a pocket, the chunkier 3D units take up more room, and a pipe-style device like the Proxy is a different proposition entirely. Onboard concentrate storage and a built-in dab tools also factor in here, since they decide whether a pen is genuinely grab-and-go or whether you need to carry a kit alongside it.

Over the years, discreetness has become less of an important factor in general. Still, we consider it, especially on smaller units or if its feature set seems to gravitate towards it.

Ease of Use and Maintenance

Ease of use is important to us because it determines how the wax pen feels to actually live with day to day. We factor this in because a vaporizer that’s complicated to operate, awkward to load, or annoying to maintain is likely to sit unused. We’re looking at how intuitive the controls are and how straightforward loading and cleaning process is.

Kirill and I both give our own scores after all other testing is complete.

Value for Money

We always weigh a device’s performance against its price to determine its true value. We evaluate whether the engineering and vapor quality justify its cost, or whether a mid-range unit offers a similar experience at a lower price.

Transparency and Organizational Disclosure

TVape is not only a review team. We also design and sell our own vaporizers. Our in-house brands include Utillian, Tronian, Zeus, and LITL, and you will have noticed Utillian and Tronian pens on this list sitting alongside everyone else’s.

A company ranking devices it profits from has an obvious reason to favor its own, so here is how we keep that in check. Our pens go through the same process as every other device on this list. Same safety gate from Clemens, same engineering breakdown from Nima, same real-world and scientific testing, same scoring. They do not skip a stage and they are not handed a spot. When one of our pens has a weakness, it goes in the write-up the same way it would for anyone else, trade-off and all.

We started making pens for the same reason we test them. After thousands of devices, you see the same gaps come up over and over, so we built ones that close them. That does not earn our brands a free pass; it just earns the spot it does because we apply the features we want to see ourselves in.

Two things keep us honest. We do not use affiliate links, so we earn no commission on any pen we rank, ours or anyone else’s, and there is no version of this list where favoring one device pays us more. And our customer feedback lives on Trustpilot, which we do not control.

About the Author

My name is Mariano Bustamante, and I lead the wax vaporizer testing team at TVape.
