What is a 510-thread battery?
510-thread batteries provide power to the heating element of your oil vape cartridge. They are usually small and portable.
They come in a variety of configurations including pen-shaped, which is shaped like a pen or mod-shaped which tend to be larger but can offer protection for your cartridge.
These batteries work with a press of a button or when a draw is taken from a vape cartridge.
The term 510 comes from the threading-style, which is the same thread style used on vape and oil carts.
What is an oil pen?
Oil pens are usually pod-based and come as a closed-loop system for your THC oil. The advantage of closed-loop oil pens is the consistency between the cartridges and the battery itself.
The oil pen battery and pod are made strictly for each other, unlike the more universal 510 threaded batteries.

What is a 510-thread cartridge?
510-thread cartridges are designed to hold concentrated THC or CBD oil for vaporization.
510 thread cartridges are composed of 3 main parts;
The glass tank, which holds the oil. The atomizer, which heats the oil. And the mouthpiece, where vapor is inhaled.
The term 510 thread refers to the size of the threading on the cartridge. This is important because you must ensure to purchase a vape battery with the same threading size.
How does a vape cartridge work?
510-thread cartridges, vape cartridges and pods do not work by themselves. They require power from a battery in order to vaporize the cannabis oil contained within them.
Once a cartridge is attached to the battery the atomizer receives power which activates the heating element.
Atomizers contain a porous material, either ceramic, organic cotton, or a combination of the two. This soaks up or “wicks” the oil towards the heating element where it is vaporized and inhaled.
What voltage should I set my 510-thread battery?
510-thread batteries and oil pens operate in voltages rather than temperatures, so it can be a bit confusing what setting to choose.
Most batteries will offer a range somewhere between 2v - 5v which will be available as either pre-sets or dialed in via the display.
The general rule of thumb is the lower the voltage, the better the flavor, but the thinner the vapor. The higher the voltage, the bigger the cloud production but at the cost of flavor and smoothness of vapor.

How do oil pens work?
Oil pens or vape pens work in the same way a vape cartridge and 510 thread battery operate. The difference is that an oil pen is usually a closed-loop system, meaning the battery and cartridge are only designed for each other.
The pods will feature an atomizer, which draws power from the oil pen battery and vaporizes the oil to be inhaled through the mouthpiece.
The key advantage to oil pens and closed-loop systems is that the battery and pods are engineered from the ground up to work efficiently together.
The downside to closed-loop systems is that they are not universally compatible and lock you into 1 type of pod and battery, which may limit strain choices.
Draw Activated Batteries
Draw Activated Batteries work by powering the oil cartridge and creating vapor whenever you take a draw from the attached vape cartridge or pod.
Draw activated batteries usually fire at a fixed voltage which cannot be manually changed. That voltage will decrease as the battery loses power.
Button Activated Batteries
Button activated Batteries involves pressing a button each time you want to take a draw, which will power your cartridge creating vapor.
Button activated units usually allow for some kind of voltage control, which can usually be changed by a combination of button presses, allowing you to tailor your session.
