Utillian 721 vs Boundless CFX Vaporizer Showdown

0

The Utillian 721 is a new convection vaporizer that has been making a name for itself with the critics. Many draw comparisons between the 721 and the Crafty in terms of style and performance. Today it will be going head to head with another Storz & Bickel doppelganger, the Boundless CFX. Both offer high quality performance for a fraction of the price of their Storz & Bickel brethren, we will break down the 2 units to determine which one holds the most value.

Utillian 721 MouthpieceVapor Quality

The Utillian 721 features a stainless steel heating chamber which uses convection heating to cook your herbs. Flavor from the 721 is smooth and consistent throughout the entire session which is to be expected from a convection unit. At the highest temperature we were able to produce nice large clouds; however flavor and smoothness did suffer slightly.

The Boundless CFX features a large ceramic heating chamber and uses a hybrid of conduction and convection to heat your herbs. The result is very smooth and pleasant vapor. Like the 721, at the highest temperature flavor and smoothness did diminish. When we first began to use this unit we did notice a plastic taste from the mouthpiece, but that seemed to lessen after a few uses.

The Utillian 721 beats out the CFX in vapor quality, but just barely. They both produce exceptional quality vapor, but we found the CFX has more of a plastic flavor to it when we used it the first few times. Because of this we have to give the edge to the 721.

Utillian 721 profile shotManufacturing Quality

The Utillian 721’s shell is constructed from anodized aluminum and has a rubberized finish for added durability. It features a one-button design and the temperature is indicated by an LED light at the top of the unit. The 721’s mouthpiece is magnetic and snaps into place for easy loading and emptying.

The Boundless CFX’s shell is constructed entirely of plastic with a rubberized grip. It features 3 buttons and a large digital display for displaying your temperature and battery indicator. The mouthpiece swivels to lock into place for convenient loading and unloading.

It is a tough call between the two units in this category. We don’t love the entirely plastic shell of the CFX, but we do really like the large digital display. The Utillian 721 on the other hand has a much more durable shell, but lacks a digital display. Overall we have to give the edge to the 721, the CFX’s use of plastic makes us worry about its durability over its lifespan, while the aluminum shell of the 721 feels more rugged and should be able to take more of a beating.

ease-of-useEase of Use

The Utillian 721 only has 1 button, so using the device is very straight forward. 5 presses turns the unit on, 2 clicks cycles through temperatures, and pressing and holding enables and disables the enhanced mode.

The CFX is also extremely easily to use. 5 clicks on the power button turn the device on, next use the up or down arrows to set your temperature.

We have to give the slight edge to the CFX when it comes to ease of use. You don’t need to memorize any button combinations to change the temperature or mode, just turn the unit on and set the temperature; it can’t get much easier than that.

Utillian 721 in handPortability

When compared side by side, the 721 is clearly the smaller of the 2 units. The 721 is roughly the size of the crafty, while the CFX is closer to the size of the Mighty. The CFX cannot be concealed in your hand and does not easily fit into the pockets of pants and must be placed in a bag. This makes the 721 the clear winner as it is small enough to be easily concealed and can fit in your pockets for easy travel.

Utillian 721 sideBattery Life

The 721 has pretty decent battery life for a portable convection unit clocking in at about 90 minutes of use. This is double the life of the leading competitor Crafty vaporizer. The 720 recharges via USB in about 2 – 3 hours and has a battery indicator located at the bottom of the device so you will know when you need to plug the unit in.

The Boundless CFX also has a decent battery life at about just over an hour. Obviously that large digital display and large heating chamber draw a little more energy. It still performs better than the Crafty in this regard and would give you 1 or 2 more sessions in comparison. We found the battery indicator of the CFX bounced around a lot giving us a different charge reading each time. This leads us to believe a cheap battery was used in the device.

We have to give this category to the 720, the unit may be smaller but the battery life out performs a lot of the higher end portable units. The CFX’s inaccurate battery indicator makes us worry some corners were cut when it comes to the battery to keep costs down.

temperature-flexibilityTemperature Flexibility

The Utillian 721 has 4 base temperatures, 170, 180, 190, 210 and the ability to increase its temperatures by 5 degrees using the enhanced mode, giving you 8 temperatures in total. For a unit that features pre-set temperatures, the 721 gives you a wide range to choose from which should satisfy most users.

The Boundless CFX features precise temperature control meaning you can set it anywhere up to 220 degrees celcius. This gives you unlimited flexibility as you can customize your session down to the degress to find the temperature that is right for you. Because of this, the CFX wins this category.

SHOWDOWNwinner

After all the dust has settled it is the 721 that emerges victorious. The Boundless CFX put up a great fight, and is a really great unit; it produces nice vapor, has a gorgeous display and is very easy to use, however it is far too bulky to be considered a true portable unit.

The Utillian 721 is sized just right, it feels nice when held in your hand while remaining small enough to fit in your pocket for easy portability. Vapor from the 721 is smooth, consistent and bountiful. It has 90 minutes of battery life making it one of the longest lasting convection vaporizers.

While it’s lacking a digital display, the 721 makes up for it with the amount of pre-set temperatures offered making it easy to find your sweet spot. We have to give props to Utillian, they really stepped up their game for the 721, it is certainly a device that should not be ignored.

If you live on the East Coast, closer to the Quebec area, and looking for a Utillian 721, we highly recommend picking one up from our friends at Vaporizers.ca, an excellent family run business.
