What is a Desktop Vaporizer?

Desktop vaporizers, (also known as stationary vaporizers or tabletop vaporizers) are essentially large hot air or heat generators and use forced air to boil the essential oils off your dry herb.

They come in 2 main styles; a whip-style, similar to a hookah which uses tubes. And balloon units which force the vapor into an inflatable bag or balloon.

Desktop units rely on a power outlet to run, which makes them less portable but more reliable over time.

They often feature a wide range of temperature control, and utilize mainly convection or hybrid heating to cook your herbs.

Our vaporizer buyers guide. goes into more depth if you want to learn more about desktop vaporizers.

How Do Desktop Vaporizers Work?

Most desktop vaporizers operate on the same principle. You fill your chamber with your desired herb and mount it on the heating element of the device.

Next, depending on the unit, you attach either a whip, which is essentially a tube to draw from, or attach a balloon.

Once the desktop vaporizer is turned on, you set your temperature, usually by a dial or digital interface.

Once temperature is reached you can start drawing from the whip or turn on the fan to fill a balloon.

When the ballon is full, switch off the fan, remove the balloon and enjoy your vapor.

Why Choose a Desktop Vaporizer Over a Portable?

Desktop vaporizers tend to be the ultimate party trick. They are great for large groups to enjoy together. Their chamber sizes tend to be larger, and most come with a wide range of temperature options.

Heating systems in desktop vaporizers also tend to be more efficient, with most using convection heat to cook your herbs. Convection works by using hot air forced over the herbs to release essential oils resulting in a more even cook.

The other benefit of a desktop vaporizer is their use of external power, most desktop units have to be plugged in to operate. This means no waiting for a unit to charge or having a battery go dead in the middle of a session. Just turn on and enjoy. What’s the Difference Between Convection, Conduction, and Hybrid Heating?

When it comes to desktop vaporizers there are 2 main methods of heating used: Convection & Hybrid

Convection based desktop vaporizers use forced air to heat your herbs, either with the help of a fan or through your draw from the whip. Desktop units that use convection often feature a balloon filling system, have better airflow and produce better flavor over the duration of a session. You can see a full list of the best convection vaporizers available here.

Hybrid based desktop vaporizers use a combination of forced air convection heat as well as direct contact with a heat source to produce vapor. Hybrid units can give you a more even cook, but at the expense of better flavor.

Conduction is a heating type method not solely used in many desktops these days. Conduction heating works by using direct contact with a heat source to generate your vapor. Think of it like cooking on a skillet.

You can check out our conduction vs convection article for more info between the different methods.

Whip vs Balloon Desktop Vaporizers

Most desktop vaporizers feature either a whip inhalation system, meaning you inhale your vapor from a tube like a hookah. These are great for long solo sessions or sharing with a few people.

Other desktop vaporizers like the famous Volcano, allow users to inflate balloons with vapor. These style of vaporizers are really great for larger sessions and sharing with bigger groups of people. They tend to be a hit at events.

Some desktop vaporizer systems offer both whip and balloon options, which are an excellent choice if you are unsure which style you will like or if you want the ability to do both.

Digital vs Manual Temperature Control

Desktop and stationary vaporizers tend to offer 2 different types of controls. Digital controlled desktop units operate with a digital display allowing you to easily set the device to any temperature. The Arizer Extreme Q is a great example of a digital controlled desktop vaporizer.

Manual control vaporizers control temperature through a dial. They may be slightly less accurate than their digital cousins, however manual control vaporizers have less opportunity to malfunction over time.

The now 20 year old Volcano vaporizer is a testament to how manual vaporizers can stand the test of time.

How Do You Know You Are Done Vaporizing?

We commonly get asked how do you know when you are done vaporizing? For a desktop vaporizer there are a few ways to tell when your herbs are fully extracted.

For whip-style vaporizers, if the flavor of your vapor starts to taste more toasty and vapor has become thin. It’s usually an indicator you are nearly done your session.

For balloon-style vaporizers, you can visually see the cloud in the balloon become wispy and the flavor will severely diminish.

Checking the color of your herbs is also possible, however most desktop vaporizers will need to cool before you can access the herb chamber. If the color of your herbs have changed from green to brown, you are most likely finished.

Can You Use a Desktop Vaporizer with Concentrates?

Yes, there are some desktop vaporizers that have the ability to vaporize both dry flower and extracts.

To use extracts in a compatible desktop vaporizer you will need a liquid pad to act as a vessel and hold your extracts for vaporization without compromising the chamber or the heater.

Desktop vaporizers that are able to also vaporize concentrates will have a wax symbol next to them in our store and will be listed under "compatibility".

While some desktop vaporizers offer wax compatibility, they were not engineered solely for extracts and won’t perform as well as a dedicated wax pen or electronic dab rig.

If you use concentrates a lot you may consider getting a dedicated wax pen, we’ve listed some of the best wax pens and e-nails in the industry if you’re interested in learning more.
