The Mighty by Storz & Bickel is an extremely popular unit and easily one of the best portable units on the market but it also comes with a significant price tag (read our full review here). And for this reason we don’t blame people for shopping around and looking for the absolute best price. However trying to save a few bucks may put you in a position where you fall victim to the ugly black market of knock off vaporizers. Much like Louis Vitton purses and iPods, vaporizers have now fell prey to the knock-off market so it is best to educate yourself and know how to spot a fake unit before you ever purchase it. We’ve already done the leg work for you purposely bringing in a fake Mighty to compare to the real deal. We will go over 4 main areas to look at when spotting a fake:
1) Back Sticker
The first and most obvious way to spot if you have received a fake Mighty is by checking the sticker on the back of the unit which contains the serial number. The Fake Mighty on the left features a cheap matte sticker that is slightly off center and poorly aligned. It is also a lighter shade of black than the originals. The original Mighty sticker has a semi-gloss finish to it and is perfectly aligned with the seams of the unit. This should be the first indication of whether or not your Mighty is legit or fake.
2) Poor Manufacturing
Manufacturing quality of the fake Mighty units are lacking the refined finish of the original unit. Most edges and seems on the fake unit are sloppily aligned or roughly finished.
In this first photo you can see the that the power button on the Fake Mighty was actually installed upside down, which is a pretty obvious red flag, but beyond that if you look at the edges around the power button of the fake compared to the original it is far less refined and looks cheaply made. The same can be said for the seam that runs down the entire side of the unit, it looks poorly finished in the photo and in your hands you can feel the rough plastic as you run your finger along the seam. The original Mighty on the other hand is extremely smooth and well manufactured there are no visual or tactile defects when running my fingers down the seams of the unit.
This theme is continued when you take a look at the bottom of the unit, once again the seam of the fake unit is crudely finished without any attention to detail.
Another thing that becomes a bit more obvious with this photo is the difference in color between the two units. The original on the left is a few shades darker than the fake mighty and when looking at it with the naked it becomes even more obvious, the fake mighty is closer to a blackish gray than the straight black of the original.
3) Display/Functions Buttons
Taking a look at the display of the 2 Mighty’s you can see that the fake Mighty’s screen is covered in scratches and is made out of extremely cheap material unlike the pristine LCD on our original Mighty.
Another give away that is a bit more tactile is the buttons on the Mighty. The original Mighty’s buttons respond with more of a soft press in, there is a click but it is fairly faint when pressing the up and down arrow of the Mighty. The fake Mighty’s button are harder and give off a much more significant plastic clicking sound when depressed. The buttons even feel cheap when pressed.
4) Heating Chamber
We have to give it up to whoever knocked off this device because they did a decent job at replicating the heating chamber, however it is not perfect. The plastic ring around the heating chamber on the fake mighty is grayer than the ring around the original which is almost a strange mix between beige and gray, whatever color it may be the fakers had a hard time matching it and it is very obvious from the naked eye that the two chambers are different. Also the o-ring around the plastic ring is a different color as well, on the fake it is thicker and light blue while the original mighty o-ring is more of a royal blue.
