Utillian recently released the Utillian 620 into the marketplace, and in our review, we stated it was, “somewhere between the Utillian 421 and the Utillian 722”. Well, we’re here to see exactly what the differences are between the Utillian 620 and the Utillian 421 and if that extra couple of dollars is worth it. We’re excited to dive in and give you details; read on to learn more!
The 421 was released in 2018 and has become a fan favourite budget unit. There were a couple of updates from the Utillian 420 that took it up a notch – the airflow control and 6 preset temperatures being the most notable.
One of the most prominent features on a device in this price category is the glass mouthpiece – cooling down the vapor as it hits your lips. It has a very consistent draw and that airflow control makes you able to customize your session a lot. In the price point, the 421 can’t be beat on vapor quality.
The 620 has helix convection, which elongates the airpath, provides a more even cook, and keeps the temperature consistent as you draw. That elongated vapor path means your hits are cooler when they reach the mouthpiece, and then cooled down even further by the glass mouthpiece.
The draws on the 620 are smooth and consistent. The chamber is actually smaller than the 421’s, but it’s the perfect microdoser – and if you prefer frequent, smaller sessions, like I do, the 620 definitely delivers. The 620 also boasts precise temperature control from 160C – 220C, which covers the ideal range of vaporization.
The category goes to the Utillian 620.
Temperature Flexibility – Precise Temperature Control or Full Extraction?
The 421 has 6 preset temperatures that range from 180-230C, that cover the optimal range of extraction temperatures.
The 620 has precise temperature control from 160-220C, and that full spectrum allows you to customize your vapor to your exact specifications.
This one’s a toss up, as the 421 has a higher max temperature, but some people prefer setting the temperature to exactly 202C.
This category is a tie.
Manufacturing Quality – High Tech or Rigidity?
Both units are sturdy and capable. The 421 has an anodized aluminum shell that is rigid and uncompromising, and a ceramic chamber that makes the flavor of your herb come through clean. That ceramic chamber actually holds a bit more than the 620.
Most of the units in the price point have some sort of plastic for the shell and/or mouthpiece. As soon as you pick up the 421, you understand the quality of the build. The airflow control at the bottom of the device is a nice touch, as well as the LED display and glass mouthpiece.
The 620 also has an anodized aluminum shell that feels a little more high tech than the 421. It opts for a more squared, sleek look – and the whole device definitely holds up to that look. The aluminum helix convection heating chamber that can be removed to keep your air path clear of gunk.
The 620 has a magnetic mouthpiece, and a magnetic tool at the bottom of the unit which is great for stirring, loading and emptying your bowl. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the design of the 620 just feels like it had every part of the user experience in mind.

Battery Life – 60 Minutes of Fame
Both of these units feature a 2300mah internal battery that will last you roughly 60 minutes of continuous use.
I find I can usually get about 6-8 sessions per charge on both of them before needing to juice it up, roughly the same as most units in a similar price point.
This one’s a tie.
Portability – Same Battery, Different Size Devices
The Utillian 421 stands around 4 inches tall and fits in most purses and pockets. The low key glass mouthpiece shouldn’t break in your pocket either. The 60 minute battery life on the 421 will last most users a day before needing a recharge.
The 620 stands just a little taller than it, and the glass mouthpiece sticks up a bit more, but that being said, it’s not noticeable. The 620 has the same battery as the 421, so your average user will not have a problem with this unit either.
This category goes to the 421, as it’s just a little smaller than its younger brother.
Ease of Use – Simplified User Experience
Utillian is all over easy to use devices, and both of these units slot into that category well. The 421 features one button operation, while the 620 has 3 buttons – two to control the temperature, and a power button.
That magnetic mouthpiece and tool at the bottom make the 620 super easy to operate – and the ability to remove the helix chamber for cleaning is great as well.
That being said, the 421 is one of the simplest devices out there – just unscrew the mouthpiece, load the chamber, screw it back on and set the temperature. Cleaning on the 421 is easy, as you can just grab a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol , clean the chamber and mouthpiece, and you’re good to go.
This one’s pretty tight, but we think this category goes to the 421.
SHOWDOWN – It All Comes Down to the Dough
Both of these budget devices are great travel buddies and each bring their own things to the table.
The 421 is a great unit, especially for under 100 dollars, with it’s glass mouthpiece, airflow control and higher max temperature.
But, for an extra 50 or so bucks, you get helix convection, a built in stir tool and magnetic mouthpiece, and precise temperature control, as well as an arguably sleeker design.
So, while the Utillian 421 is good for anyone who wants to spend the bare minimum on a vaporizer, If you’re interested in stepping your vaporizer game up a notch, opt for the Utillian 620.
