Today we are excited to be taking a look at the Tourist vaporizer by Focusvape, manufacturers of the very popular Focusvape Vaporizer. The Tourist is a 2 in 1 vaporizer meaning it can handle both herbs and concentrates. While most of the time multi-functional units tend to not do either function particularly well, the Focusvape Tourist defies this trend offering an excellent, water filtered, session for herbs and concentrates alike. So let’s jump right in and take a deeper look.
Review: FocusVape Tourist
How it Works
The Tourist is able to achieve a unique and satisfying session for both dry herbs and concentrates because the unit actually comes with 2 different attachments for each method.
If you want to use the Tourist for concentrates, attach the wax attachment to the base. Next fill the filter with water and mount it onto the wax attachment.
Load your desired amount of wax onto the applicator, switch the unit to “Wax” mode and set your temperature. When the Tourist has reached temperature, place the concentrates into the titanium nail while drawing from the unit.
When using with herbs, select the Dry Herb attachment and screw it onto the base of the unit. Unscrew the mouthpiece to expose the heating chamber and fill it with your desired herbs.
If you want to use the unit with the included water filter, screw the mouthpiece back on, remove the glass tip from the mouthpiece, fill the filter with water and place the glass water filter onto the herb attachment.
Next turn the unit on by flipping the switch to “Herb”. The LED will turn on, display the set temperature and begin heating. To customize the set temperature simply press the + or – buttons. When the display reads your set temperature you can begin taking draws from the water filter.
The two attachments for the Tourist allow the device to be extremely flexible when it comes to temperature.
The herb attachment can be set anywhere between 90C – 240C giving users a wide range to work with when enjoying their botanicals.
The wax attachment can be set between between 260 – 400C giving users a VERY wide range to work with for concentrates as well.
With the wide range of temperatures for both herbs and waxes, the Tourist can satisfy almost any user and their vapor preferences.
With such a wide range of temperatures to choose from, users who prefer thinner more flavorful vapor will find the lower temperature ranges perfectly suitable for them. For herbs we recommend around 180C – 190C for excellent flavor and thin vapor and around 260 – 300 for waxes for similar type of vapor.
This unit can also satisfy those who are looking for thicker vapor as well, for herbs you can go as high as 240C if you really want some serious clouds. And for concentrates we recommend around 375C for best results.
The water filter really helps with the quality of your vapor, especially when using the unit at higher temperatures. The water filter helps to cool down the vapor before it reaches your throat which will result in a much smoother draw. This may encourage those who usually vape at low temperatures to avoid irritation, to try higher temperatures because of the cooling effect of the water.
Flavor from the Tourist is really impressive; we could not believe all the subtle flavors we were able to taste off both our herbs and waxes. And the fact that it handles both materials so well is a huge bonus.
Focusvape really stepped up their game with this unit. The device appears to be extremely well machined and put together. Both glass pieces we received were flawless and worked as intended.
We love the fact that they designed two separate attachments to handle each material separately. Most units that attempt to offer users 2-in-1 functionality usually do so by just adding a wax canister to insert into the dry herb chamber.
The issue is, waxes and concentrates vaporize much better at higher temperatures, temperatures that are far too hot for dry herbs. So the wax experience suffers because you are using temperatures intended for herbs for concentrates.
With the Tourist, herbs and waxes are handled completely different with each attachment. The herb attachment is set up like a standard ceramic heating chamber found on most units. The chamber on the herb attachment is fairly large allowing you to load a decent amount of herbs for larger sessions.
The wax attachment is designed to work like an e-rig, similar to the Dr. Dabber Boost. There is a ceramic rod underneath the titanium nail that heats up to very high temperatures to cause the vaporization process.
When using the wax attachment we were really happy to see the nail start to turn bluish/purple after a few uses. This means that Focusvape used real titanium for this piece which is considered one of the best heating materials to use for concentrates. This just goes to show that Focusvape is not cutting corners, even on smaller parts.
The Focusvape Tourist contains an 18650 battery to run the device. When using the herb attachment we found we could get about an hour’s worth of use from the Focusvape Tourist. This is fairly average and to be expected with a unit that only uses one 18650, with other units like the Arizer Air lasting roughly 45 minutes.
The 18650 battery is removable so you can certainly purchase additional to have spares handy for an easy swap if you are every without power.
When using the device in “Wax Mode” the battery tends to last longer. But this is also because a session with waxes usually only lasts 1 or 2 minutes, as opposed to the 10 – 15 minute sessions with herbs. Thus you will be able to use the Tourist more with waxes without charging as frequently.
The Tourist is not all that portable, mostly because of the 2 separate pieces for each mode and the included glass filters.
This unit really is designed more for home use than to be brought out for a night on the town.
However if you wish to use the unit for herbs, you can forgo the water filter and just opt for the standard mouthpiece, which essentially turns your Tourist into a slightly bulkier FocusVape Pro.
This set up is much more portable than the water filter setup, but is still farily large and certainly won’t fit in your pocket (unless you’re MC Hammer).
Probably the thing we like most about the Tourist is how easy it is to use. The separate attachments make it super easy to swap from herbs to concentrates and also insures each material is vaporized in the most efficient way possible.
There are no fancy menus or settings to learn, just simply flip the switch to herbs if you are using the herb attachment or wax for the wax attachment. Then, set your temperature and enjoy!
The only gripe we have about the Tourist is the water filters, which can be a bit finicky. When removing the water filter from the device (especially with the herb water filter), turn the device upside. This will stop water from accidentally spilling onto the device.
Also because the filters are designed to be spill-resistant they can be a bit hard to clean. You will have to blow through the mouthpiece to force the cleaner out of the filter and then rinse thoroughly with water to get any reminisce of the cleaner out.
We are extremely happy to finally have a true 2-in-1 one capable of effectively handling both herbs and concentrates.
It may not be as compact as some may hope for and some may see it as a desktop unit rather than a portable due to the size and multiple attachments.
But the good certainly outweighs the bad and the swap-able heating elements adds a flexibility and efficiency not seen in any other unit.
The water filtration provides smooth draws each time and will allow users to increase temperature for thicker vapor with experiencing the irritation that is usually associated with higher temperatures.
For the price you get a ton in this nifty little kit and it will certainly be hard to pass up for someone looking for a unit that truly offers the best of both worlds.
