Dynavap M (2018 version) Review – Respect the Click

Updated: December 16, 2021

Though we’ve already covered Dynavaps TiWoody and NonaVong, we figured we’d give the standard Dynavap M a review. A crowd favorite, Dynavap has made some minor adjustments and tweaks to the original for 2018. We’ll be going over the Dynvap M and how this tiny vaporizer performs, and any differences that the 2018 model has from the 2017 iteration. Being a butane vaporizer, it doesn’t use any batteries but rather uses a butane torch as a heat source, making it different from many conventional dry herb vaporizers.

Editors Note: Dynavap has released an updated version of their popular M vaporizer, you can check out our review of the 2019 Dynavap M to find out what is new and if it is worth the upgrade.

Review: Dynavap M (2018 version)

How it Works

The Dynavap M has a slight learning curve. You remove the cap, fill the chamber with around 0.05 grams of herb (either large chunks or ground), replace the cap and heat it up with any butane torch! Wait until the tip clicks, and then inhale!

Use the carb hole to your advantage if trying to clear the chamber, and modulating between covering it and letting it flow freely changes the traits of the vapor you inhale.

With a water pipe, the standard mouthpiece will fit any 10mm joint, and it’s as simple as heating the unit and fitting it over the 10mm opening. Simple to use and effective!

There are no differences in using the 2018 model and previous models.

Temperature Flexibility

Being a butane powered vaporizer, the temperature you set it at is entirely up to you and your technique. Heat-up time is rapid, depending on the type of lighter you use. A multi-jet lighter will heat up the Dynavap much quicker than a single one. Where you heat the Dynavap also changes – heating on the side and slowly rotating it offers a different experience than heating just the tip.

When the tip clicks, then it’s time to inhale! You can continue heating for a couple seconds after the initial click to get a higher temperature and thus a heavier hit, though it’s important to be careful as too much heat will combust your herb!

All things considered, as it’s a user dependent heating source, you’re given full temperature flexibility – just no way of precisely setting it. Until you master your technique, that is! There are no differences between previous models and the 2018 model in temperature flexibility.

Vapor Quality

For best results, we recommend drying your herbs with a de-humidor. Once you get the hang of the heating and technique, you can get some seriously dense clouds with great flavor! The vapor is surprisingly cool and with water pipe compatibility, you get very tasty, on-demand draws.

The heating could be considered a mix of conduction and convection as the herb does physically touch the walls of the chamber, though when you take a draw, the air is heated enough to give some elements of convection.

With a water pipe, the quality just gets even better! Smoother and more flavorful hits make this tiny vaporizer extremely versatile too. The standard mouthpiece fits in any 10mm female joint, though 10mm to 14 or 18mm adapters can be used for further compatibility.

Between the 2018 model and previous iterations, there is a slightly cooler vapor that comes out and draw resistance is slightly reduced too! Though not massive improvement, it’s a small and welcome change, especially for only a $5 difference between the 2017 and 2018 version.

Manufacturing Quality

Being made entirely of stainless steel, the build quality feels fantastic! Durable, weighty, tiny, and precise are some words I’d use to describe it. Each piece is very well machined, and as it doesn’t use batteries or any electronics, it’s practically impossible to break.

There are some really fantastic accessories available too like the Dynastash, Carbon Fibre and Titanium stems, wood mouthpieces and more!

For what you pay, you’re given a really well machined little unit that’ll stand the test of time. No plastic, no breakables, just a proven design.

Some subtle differences have been made for the 2018 Dynavap M. The fins on the condenser are a bit smaller and more effective, the carb hole has been made a little easier to feel for, some knurling is introduced onto the midsection to make rotating it easier, and the logo is a little more discreet. Overall, not much changed, but again, they’re welcome changes!

Portability

Probably one of the smallest dry herb vaporizers to date, the Dynavap M is uber portable and can fit practically anywhere. Of course, you’ll need to carry a butane lighter, though, in a pinch, any ordinary gas station lighter will work just fine.

It’s much preferred to use a decent butane lighter though as it’ll take longer with a normal lighter and you’ll have to clean the tip from black soot occasionally. There are no differences in portability with the 2018 model and previous ones.

Ease of Use

After you’ve had a few sessions with the Dynavap, you’ll have understood it entirely. Though a complete beginner will need a little bit of coaching, overall it’s pretty easy to use. Heat until it clicks, cover the carb hole, and inhale. Changing up your lighter and draw technique lets you fine-tune your experience as such.

Cleaning is relatively easy. Some isopropyl alcohol makes quick work of any built-up residue, and the stainless steel screen swaps out with ease.

For the 2018 and previous model years, there are no differences.

Discreetness

Since it’s so tiny and completely on-demand, this is a great choice for a discreet vaporizer. It’ll fit entirely hidden in your hand, you can have a session in less than 30 seconds and to some, it may look like a tiny e-cigarette.

There are no differences in the discreetness category for the 2018 and previous models.

A great starter vaporizer if you don’t mind butane, the Dynavap M 2018 is a nifty if not niche little device.

If you’re looking for something bite-sized which instead uses a battery as a power source at a similar price point, check out the Utillian 420.
