G Pen Micro+ (Plus) Review – A Worthy Upgrade?

Updated: March 26, 2024

It’s been a hot minute since anything from the esteemed connoisseurs at Grenco Science has graced our pages. So when the G Pen Micro Plus landed on our desk for a review, we were eager to take a crack at it.

Designed as a spiritual successor to the MicroG, the G Pen Micro Plus takes a stab at providing high-quality wax vaporization in a portable and easy-to-use package. How well did G Pen do? You can see how this Wax Pen stacks up against others in its category on our Best Wax Pens Ranking Page. As a general concept, we consider this device a budget Wax Pen, and it ranks similarly to the Utillian 2.

In this article, we will put the Micro Plus to the test and see if it delivers.

Review: G Pen Micro Plus

GPen Micro review

gpen micro chamberHow it Works – Is it Easy to Control?

The G Pen Micro + is quite simple to use, it features a single button that operates the entire device. The Micro Plus can switch between 3 temperature settings by rapidly pressing the button 3 times. You can also alternate between Manual or session mode by rapidly pressing twice. Assuming you want the simplest option, this is how the G Pen Micro + Works:

  • Step 1: Charge the device fully.
  • Step 2: Press the button 5 Times to power ON.
  • Step 3: Choose your Temperature Setting
  • Step 4: Press the button twice to engage Auto heating.
  • Step 5: Inhale From the mouthpiece once the LED light turns solid.

gpen micro temperatureTemperature Flexibility – Simple, but is it effective?

As previously mentioned, the G Pen Micro Plus features a standard 3 temperature setting preset system similar to the Gammatron since it works off of voltages as opposed to temperatures.

Unlike most wax pens, however, the G Pen Micro Plus integrates some form of temperature control that reads off the current temperature of the coil when turned on. The result is a lower chance of overheating or burnt-tasting wax and a decent step up from the average wax pen.

The 3 temperature settings that the Micro offers are as follows:

  • Low (2.5Volts) – Represented by Blue LED
  • Medium (2.75Volts) – Represented by Green LED
  • High (3.0Volts) – Represented by Red LED

This Wax Pen comes with two modes that offer different options to manage the heat output. A standard manual mode that heats up the coil while holding down the power button.

The second mode can be accessed by quickly pressing the main button twice. The automatic session mode keeps the coil heated for 10 seconds straight, allowing you to inhale in the process. Both modes work sufficiently well, but we prefer the pre-heat mode as it does a better job of ramping up the temperature and keeping it consistent for each session.

gpen micro vapor qualityVapor Quality – How Powerful is the Conduction Heating?

The vapor, in general, is okay for the simplicity that the G Pen Micro Plus provides, especially in terms of flavor, thanks to its ceramic plate heating. The production of the vapor itself is nothing special. While the ceramic and quartz combo does produce clean-tasting vapor, it still wasn’t as flavorful as more powerful wax pens such as the Utillian 5.

For what it’s worth, the G Pen Micro Plus still offers a hands-off approach to wax vaporization, which is great for beginners. The automatic or pre-heat setting on the device provides consistent results, which can sometimes be hard to achieve with other wax pens.

The Micro + uses strictly conduction based heating, which means that your Solid Wax will need to be in direct contact with the plate to vaporize efficiently. It does not produce the same results as a Convection or a Hybrid device. You can check out our guide to learn more about the differences in heating methods.

gpen micro caseManufacturing Quality – Budget Wax Pen at What Cost?

One of our favorite aspects of the G Pen Micro Plus is its stainless steel housing. This offsets its compact size and provides a nice feeling in the hand. The threads that connect the coil and battery are machined well enough to facilitate quick and easy assembly/disassembly. The ergonomic shape feels great to inhale off of, and heat transfer is kept to a minimum

The G pen Micro Plus also gets points for its well-designed silicone mouthpiece. However, we don’t recommend this since it will reduce the quality of your vapor taste. Although we know that silicone is an affordable option, we’ve seen G Pen achieve better results with other materials, as seen on the G Pen Elite 2, which uses a Zirconia Mouthpiece.

The power button is another common point of failure on Wax Pens. In this case, the Micro + does not provide anything new, but the one main button is decently built. The LED surrounding the button is nice since it removes the need for a display or complicated apps.

gpen micro charging portBattery Life – Is the USB C Worth The Small Battery?

The 850mAh battery of the G Pen Micro Plus is probably one of its weakest points as it falls below average as far as Wax Pens deliver. For those who prefer a relatively high-powered session, the G Pen Micro Plus will most likely require a recharge before the day is over. I don’t understand the reason behind the small battery since even the G Pen Dash has more mAh and is even cheaper.

Fortunately, the Micro + manages to slightly make up for its smaller battery life with its inclusion of passthrough charging via the USB C. Finding a suitable power source is hardly a challenge when the battery eventually runs dry.

Charging time isn’t that impressive either, given its small battery capacity, requiring a full 90 minutes before fully topping up. The long charge time is surprising given that it already uses USB C, as we’ve seen higher capacity batteries charge faster and with the lower-tech Micro USB ports.

Portability – Is its Form Factor Enough To Be Portable?

The G Pen Micro Plus features a sleek and compact design, making it pretty reliable to use when on the go. The device has a single button for simple operation and three temperature options. This allows you to customize your vaporization experience easily while on the move.

Loading the G Pen Micro + is simple enough to reload while on the move, thanks to its keychain tool included in the Travel Case. With that said, there are definitely other Wax Pens at this point that have made more convenient designs, like the feature-rich Gammatron, which comes with a built in tool and wax container. The added utility makes it easier for the Gammatron to be used outside since it means you don’t need to carry different tools with you.

The Micro + is still above average when it comes to its portability, thanks to its small form factor. Also, its relatively easy to use, which we will look at with more detail in the next segment.

gpen micro easy to useEase of Use – Made Easy for Beginners

As previously mentioned, the Micro + is decently simple to figure out. Its single-button operation is quick and easy once you get used to it. The 3 options are Low, Medium, and High, so users will need to test the settings before finding the right one.

An indicator light that highlights the power button flashes while heating up and remains solid when the device has reached its target temperature. Haptic feedback is also available and the  G Pen Micro Plus vibrates to let you know when it’s time to vape.

We recommend cleaning the unit regularly to ensure your device functions correctly for longer. For an in-depth guide on how to clean a Wax Pen, refer to our guide.

G Pen Micro+ (Plus) DiscreetnessDiscreetness – How Easy is it to Spot Outside?

We’ve gone over the portable form factor, but what we think makes this device lower profile is its sleek black design. The black exterior makes it hard to see in the dark, but the LED Lights will be harder to hide.

As with most vaporizers, they already produce less smell than smoking, as seen in our survey. In this article, we see that close to 80% of users agreed that the odor of Vaporizing does not linger indoors. Smoking and Vaporizing are quite different methods of heating, so discreetness is easier achieved with any Vaporizer.

gpen micro kitOverall Experience – Is this Budget Device Worth the Upgrade?

We like most of what the G Pen Micro Plus has to offer. Its compact yet stylish form factor makes it one of the more pocketable wax pens we’ve had the pleasure of testing.  With that said, it really doesn’t have anything that stands out, and some choices that G Pen made are questionable. The battery is one of its weakest points and can be hard to overlook for those who vape frequently; the passthrough charging feature and its USB C port don’t feel enough to make up for it.

The G Pen Micro Plus seems to have gotten the simple and straightforward approach to portable Wax vaporizing down in terms of the form factor. But we can’t gloss over the fact that the vapor output isn’t at the level of some Wax Pens in its price point. You can see how Micro + stacks up against its peers on our Best Vape Pens Ranking page, where we rank devices based on quality, manufacturing, price, and more.

This device is not recommended for veterans but is decent for beginners on a budget. There are definitely other options, but this one won’t disappoint if you’re looking for a cheap Wax Pen.
