Boundless CF vs Crafty – Little Brother Brawl

The Boundless CF and the Crafty from Storz and Bickel look very similar, leading many of our readers to wonder if there is any reason to spend so much more money to get the Crafty. Are they basically the same vaporizer with wildly different prices or is the Crafty packing better features under a similar shell? We’re about to find out…

CF vs CraftyBoundless CF vs Crafty

Crafty cooling unitVapor Quality

The Boundless CF offers better vapor than you would expect for the price. It offers a hybrid of conduction and convection heating is very enjoyable, with good overall flavor and smooth draws at lower temperatures.

In my experience, the vapor quality isn’t as good at higher temperatures, and this seems to be something that other people report as well. It does a good job of extracting nice sized draws even at mid to low temperatures, so you may not even find the need to push it higher.

The Crafty is definitely on a different playing field when it comes to vapor. While the CF is enjoyable and a good replacement if you don’t have the money for a Crafty, there’s no denying that the Crafty offers better vapor. This is because the Crafty employs mostly convection based vapor with very little conduction to preserve flavor.

The flavor is better at all temperatures, though especially so as you go higher. The CF matches it on how smooth the vapor is at low temps, but the Crafty starts to outperform it around 370F.

Crafty with mouthpiece outManufacturing Quality

The manufacturing quality for the CF is good overall. The one-button design is convenient and still offers the ability to choose between 5 presets. The top of the unit swivels to reveal the heating chamber, which can hold up to half a gram of herbs. These parts are all machined well and turn smoothly.

The one thing that I really don’t like about the CF is the battery life. You’ll only get between 30-45 minutes and 2-4 sessions out of every charge. The average battery life for a decent vaporizer is more like 1.5 hours, or 2 to 3 times more than the CF.

The Crafty is extremely well made. While it looks similar to the CF, closely comparing the two makes it obvious that there is a quality difference. Unfortunately, the Crafty also suffers from a poor battery life, averaging about 45 minutes between charges.

The Crafty also features a simple, one button design, but it’s more versatile in its functionality than the CF. The device itself is only capable of hitting two temperatures at a time: the base temperature and a boost level that you can activate at any point during a session.

The trick is that you can set these two temperatures to any level that you want using a specially designed app for the Crafty. I really like this as a way to keep the actual unit extremely simple.

Crafty heating chamber Ease of Use

Like I mentioned above, the CF only has one button. You use it to turn the device on and toggle between the 5 temperature presets. The only other thing you have to do is load the chamber. In other words, this is very easy to use.

As easy as the CF is, I actually find the Crafty even easier. Or at least just as easy with more functionality. I really like the way Storz and Bickel approached making a device that doesn’t offer temperature control directly on the unit.

Once I get used to a vaporizer, I typically end up vaping at just two temperatures anyway. The first is the starting temperature I like based on overall flavor, and the second is the level I bump it up to to make sure I extracted everything. The Crafty makes this intuitive while giving you full control over what those levels are.

Crafty and Boundless CF with Armor CasePortability

Both of these devices are similarly sized and convenient enough to carry around with you throughout the day.In that sense, they’re both portable. They both suffer from the same setback though, which is their short battery life.

You can only get a few sessions out of either of these before you need to recharge it, which can be inconvenient if you are out doing something.

Crafty side viewBattery Life

The battery life for either of these is poor. You won’t find many, if any, legitimate dry herb vaporizers that have a shorter battery life. The Crafty seems to outperform the CF in this department, but by a slim margin.

On average, I’d expect to get one extra session of about 10-15 minutes out of a full charge with the Crafty.

Crafty top down and boundless cfDiscreetness

The overall discretion of both of these is similar. They’re the same basic size and shape, and they both have a swivel mouthpiece on top for when you are using it. The design and color is even the same.

So I wouldn’t call either of these more discreet than the other, and I think that both are average in this department. They aren’t the most discreet units on the market, but they aren’t the least either.

Bottom of craftyTemperature Flexibility

If you don’t plan on getting the Crafty app, then the CF has more built in temperature flexibility. There are 5 presets to choose between, ranging from 170C to 213C.

If you do get the app, then you unlock full temperature control with the Crafty. Only two temperatures can be used at any one time, but as I discussed above, this is all many people will actually use in a session anyway.

There really isn’t any reason to not get the app, and once you find temperatures you like, you won’t have to use it again unless you want to change them.

Crafty Showdown WinnerSHOWDOWN

The Crafty is the clear winner of this showdown.

While owners of the CF may proclaim their love for it all over internet forums, a head to head comparison shows that the Crafty is better made and delivers more enjoyable vapor. The Crafty would be nearly perfect if it just had a better battery powering it.

I don’t want you to think that I’m not a fan of the CF. For the price, it is a good value. The vapor quality is better than you’ll get from most vaporizers with a similar cost, and it’s well made overall.
