Best Dab Pens of 2026 – Scientifically Tested
Hello, vape connoisseurs, Mariano here. I head the vaporizer testing team here at TVape. We designed this page to reflect all updates to the Dab Pen market, as reported by our testing team.
We noticed that online rankings shifted quite a bit and were very different from each other, so we decided to create a standardized system to ensure our testing was done in an environment that fosters objectivity. Our standardized testing framework was built by our Chief Research Officer, Dr. Clemens Tscheka (PhD, Pharmaceutical Technology). It's designed to put our team of reviewers (largest in the market) with extensive vaporizer knowledge to work on scientifically testing the units and building a consensus which we use to populate the list on this page.
That is the core of what we have found across fifteen years of testing: no single dab pen maximizes performance across all the criteria we consider when testing. That is because engineering is a series of trade-offs. A wax pen tuned for pure flavor usually can't make the thickest clouds. One built for big rips and convenience usually gives up a bit on flavor. The best pen is not the one that wins every category, it's the one that nails your specific priority.
How to use this list
Rather than crown a single overall winner (which wouldn't be accurate), we use a Benchmark Award System that flags each pen's strengths. But knowing a device's strength is only half the decision. For every pen, we also spell out the inherent trade-off we found in testing, so you know exactly how to choose the right dab pen for you.
Curious how we arrive at these rankings? See How We Test below, including the safety and materials teardown, our thermal and temperature-accuracy testing, and where customer feedback and pricing come into play.
"Best Pen" for Dabs
The Utillian 6 is a dab pen with an interesting premise. It takes home the best pen for dabs because its features are very similar to those we see on rig-type units (regarded as best for dabbers). The idea here is combining a glass bucket, compatible with terp pearls (comes from rigs), and a vortex airflow, which ensures they spin reliably. This combination of features made the Utillian 6’s vapor lean towards consistent, flavor-first sessions.
In our testing, we noticed that what made sessions good was mainly their consistency. There's a lot of performance packed into this unit, and they all combine into a system that keeps sessions consistent. The glass chamber makes the session visible too, so you can actually see it work while you inhale. The U6 also has an extended mouthpiece (when used, makes looking at the vapor easier). It does make the overall form factor a bit bulkier, but that bit of extra space gives the vapor more time to cool down. The extended mouthpiece’s exterior is made of silicone, and it has a small metal tube inside to isolate the vapor.
I also noticed the best results with smaller dabs, usually between 0.05 and 0.1g, really brought the flavor out. Larger dabs don't really vaporize as evenly and require a few more seconds or a higher temperature.
Now, in terms of on-the-go use, the U6 is on the larger side for a pen, but it fits a generous 1500 mAh capacity battery. During testing, we noted that it usually runs for up to 15 full sessions, depending on the temperature settings used. Speaking of which, the temperature works through 4 calibrated voltage levels. We did notice a bit of discoloration on the bottom of the glass chamber. This happens because that's where the heating element is located.
Utillian also built a small wax container directly into the bottom of the unit, which is a great optional piece of tech that keeps your concentrate fresh on an outing without needing to carry a separate jar. We got used to it quickly since it uses the standard single-button control with LEDs and haptic feedback. It heats up relatively quickly for a dab pen, usually taking about 20 to 25 seconds to be ready to roll.
Overall, it does a good job of bringing rig-like features into a more compact form factor. And its one of the only units on the list that allows you to see the vapor generation process while you dab.

"Best Dab Pen" with Advanced Heating
The Dr. Dabber Ghost 2 won the award for best advance heating. It's a performance driven dab pen that's surprisingly compact. It uses a 360 heating (aka sidewall heating), which keeps all sides of the chamber heated for more consistent sessions. Dr. Dabber also added real-time temperature control to the Ghost 2, which makes it so that the unit can read the current temperature and keep the heat where you set it. It works through the heating software which uses power curves and chamber recalibrations to keep the heating stable.
Its form factor is a major reason why we ranked it highly. I found it extremely comfortable to hold, because of its size, and the mouthpiece doesn't stick out like some others on the list. Speaking of which, I thought it was zirconia at first, but it's actually a black ceramic. The only issue I noticed is that the airflow nozzle doesn't fully lower into the chamber, which reduces the airflow slightly.
The process of using the unit is simple, but the Ghost 2 does have some pretty advanced tech that gives you a few customization options to change around how the session feels. Starting with the heating, the Ghost 2 has 3 different modes that adjust how the heat is applied to your chamber. The ascent mode felt best for me because the first few hits are super flavorful.
Kirill preferred Steady mode, which keeps the temperature as close as possible to what you set it for the entire session timer (usually stays within 10 degrees Celsius). Nevertheless, the modes are easy to use and give you a different way to adjust sessions without relying solely on temperature. Speaking of temperature, the Ghost 2 offers 5 preset settings in a pretty decent range. It's low enough for terpene dense hits and high enough for output focused sessions.
When loading, I would strongly recommend using a heated dab tool (we used the hot wax axe). Mainly because the chamber is narrow, which makes loading with a metal tool a little messy.
Overall, the Ghost 2 accomplishes its goal. It's compact, reliable, and has a fully functioning 3D chamber. Its a great unit I would recommend to anyone who wants to dab on the go without losing too much session quality.
- Best For: Users prioritizing pocketable size and terpene-clean flavor

"Budget Wax Pen" with 3D Heating
The Puffco Pivot entered the category with a lot of hype. It was among the first to bring a fully functional 3D chamber to a relatively small form factor. The main idea here for Puffco was to downsize their well-known 3D heating chamber(from their E Rigs).
The Pivot features 4 different heat settings, which follow the same range as most Puffco units, but it works well and covers most use cases. It also comes with a boost mode, which not only heats up the chamber a bit more but also extends your session timer. The session timer is really what I ended up using the boost mode for.
When it comes to preparing a session with the Pivot, the overall sequence is nothing new. Loading is pretty easy (especially with a heated dab tool). The unit uses the classic single-button interface with LEDs. These LEDs are nice to look at, and the indicator is surprisingly advanced for this price point.
There's a small side air intake in the mouthpiece, which helps introduce more air into the inhale. This is a great addition for me and users who enjoy smoother hits and don't want to struggle with restricted hits. I did notice that, since the intake is on one side, it tends to move the concentrates to the opposite side rather than fully circulate them around the chamber (for more consistent heating).
While taking the Pivot out for testing, I noticed a few things. The silicone mouthpiece stays very cool despite the extra powerful heating. It can slowly reduce flavor over time because this type of silicone is porous (compared to metal, glass, or ceramic). Still, it serves its purpose of keeping the unit comfortable to manage, and is relatively inexpensive to replace every so often.
I also noticed that the Pivot’s battery life is moderate compared to other premium pens, but a larger battery would require a larger size, so they seem to have prioritized compactness.
Overall, the Pivot is best suited for the type of user who wants strong vapor output in a manageable form factor.

"Best Portable" Wax Pen
The Tronian Gammatron is a budget friendly dab pen built with a clear focus on quick, on-the-go sessions. It takes our award for Best Portable Wax Pen thanks to its feature set. This includes a built-in tool, a wax storage container, and instant heating.
In our testing, Kirill and I noticed right away that the Gammatron is engineered for punchy, hard-hitting sessions rather than flavor chasing. The large Kanthal coil generates a lot of raw thermal energy, causing it to heat up almost instantly. It’s quite powerful, and we noticed it can even vaporize a bit of hash. Such a powerful coil does require a bit of extra attention to ensure you don't overcook your concentrates. Finding the sweet spot takes a bit of experimentation, because overheating is easy, especially if you prefer smoother sessions.
Because the heating is powerful, the black zirconia for the mouthpiece fits really well. Zirconia does a great job of insulating heat, and it also feels really nice to inhale from. The best part for me is that it makes loading concentrates easier, since it doubles as a loading tool, but you do have to be a little careful when putting the top cap back on. Because the engineering tolerances are so tight to keep the pen slim, the internal O-rings can sometimes get caught on the metal body and jam up or tear.
There's a handy silicone-lined wax storage container built right into the base of the unit that twists off and on. It’s a nice touch because you don't have to carry extra concentrate jars around with you on an outing. And that is truly the main benefit of the Gammatron. Its ability to self-contain your sessions, giving you everything you need to get going on the device itself.
Operating the device is simple, with a standard single-button interface that cycles through three calibrated voltage settings. One minor thing Kirill and I noticed is that the static side airflow can make a faint whistling sound if you pull a bit too aggressively, but for the most part, it keeps the draw consistently open.
If a budget-friendly pen that hits hard and is meant for on-the-go is what you're looking for, the Gammatron is a solid option.
- Best For: Users seeking a very portable wax pen option.
- Vapor Quality: Combination of both flavor and vapor density.
- Build Quality: Extremely durable steel base and PVD coating.
- Ease of Use: Simple, single-button operation.
- Battery Life: 800mAh and USB-C for long sessions.

"Most Popular" Wax Pen
The Utillian 5V4 makes the list as the best dab pen for heavy hitters. It is a unit focused on providing lots of power for large cloud production. The core engineering here relies on two, unique coil based heaters that give you the option to choose between two different types sessions. The kanthal coil is wrapped around black ceramic rods. It's an old school heavy duty setup designed to heat up quickly, and that it does. There's also a triple titanium coil, which is a bit less efficient, but has a ton of room for larger dabs.
The U5 has been through a few updates since its initial release in 2019. One of the main updates that I noticed with the unit was its mouthpiece. Its mouthpiece is made of black ceramic. It now works as a built-in tool as well (like the Gammatron). You can load your wax onto the mouthpiece, and then when placed back on the device and heated, the wax will fall straight into the center of the coil. This feature is great because I found myself not needing to clean any sticky tools.
In use, I noticed both coils are good for quick and powerful heating. The kanthal coil is a bit better if you enjoy flavor, but the unit overall is mostly suited for vapor production. It's among the few units that can effectively vaporize hash, as well. During testing, Kirill noted that the Utillian 5V4 can create vapor very quickly with both chambers. It doesn't rely on temperature calibrations, rather its focus is on raw output and quick heating. Now, it's definitely possible to achieve smoother sessions (especially with a bubbler), but it does require a bit of experience. I found the best results with the lowest settings and by paying extra attention not to hold the button down for too long at a time.
Cleaning takes a bit of preparation, I found myself using all the chambers I had available (having spares makes it much easier). As I soaked a used chamber, I'd replace it with a new one and repeat the cycle. This way, maintenance becomes easy, otherwise, it's simply not as easy to maintain as a bucket chamber, which you can swab easily with a cotton swab and alcohol.
Overall, the Utillian 5 keeps showing up as a strong option for users who want to get the most vapor they can out of their concentrates.
- Best For: Users seeking powerful and portable sessions.
- Vapor Quality: Excellent, with adjustable airflow for big clouds.
- Build Quality: Durable with tough PVD coating and black ceramic mouthpiece.

"Most Innovative" Concentrate Pen
The New Puffco Proxy is a premium modular wax pen that won our Most Innovative Wax Pen award. It focuses mainly on flavor, through a glass pipe-like airpath and a 3D chamber. Its main base (where the chamber and battery are located) is where the core technology lies. The special thing about the Proxy is that you can switch out the glass pieces with other alternatives, which end up giving you different types of sessions. Now, it does require you to purchase the other glass pieces(and they do get expensive), but the versatility is something not really seen in other units.
For testing purposes, we decided to use only the standard glass (which comes in the box). Although I have tested the other glass pieces as well, the standard glass is among my favorites. It does a great job of cooling vapor down, and doesn't get hot to hold quickly. That said, glass is a fragile material compared to metal or heavy plastic. This just means being a bit extra careful with the handling. I found transporting the device to be easier when the base and glass piece are disassembled (another cool feature of modular design).
The modular aspect of the Proxy is very unique, and it's made possible because of silicone wrapping the base. The silicone is necessary (from an engineering perspective) to get a perfectly airtight seal on the glass. It keeps things heat safe, but silicone also tends to collect a bit of concentrate odor over time. Keeping the unit clean and maintained is especially important for this unit.
Operating the device day-to-day is straightforward since you can just use the physical single-button interface to cycle through your saved presets. The Proxy comes with 4 of its own preset temperatures, which offer a standard range for regular vaporization.
The Proxy also features full app connectivity, which gives you access to a bit more depth when it comes to customization. It allows you to change the temperature settings and even the power curves to your exact preference. However, after setting the temperatures once, we never really found the need to open the app again. This, for me, is great, you can fine-tune your settings but are not chained to the app to gain access to the changes.
Overall, if you are looking for a premium, flavor first dab pen and enjoy the idea of adding new pieces to the collection, the Proxy is a great option.

"Highest Quality" Wax Pen
The Focus V Aeris demands its spot on the list as the highest quality wax pen. Focus V did a great job figuring out how to fit a fully functioning 3D chamber into a truly portable form factor, utilizing the same Intelli-Core smart heating found in their popular Carta 2. Its size is definitely on the larger side, but all design choices point towards maximum output being the priority. Heating the bottom plate and sidewalls together leaves no room for cold spots, and in practice, the vapor thickness is immediately noticeable.
In our testing, Kirill noted that the vapor generation is incredibly consistent because the chamber generates a high amount of heat quickly and keeps it stable. I noticed that even at lower temperatures, the vapor profile moves very quickly towards thick clouds rather than subtle flavor. A big reason for this is the use of silicone. Because the Aeris generates a ton of continuous heat, thick silicone insulation is required around the core to keep the outer shell manageable to hold.
Focus V added a unique modular mouthpiece with a quartz-glazed ceramic insert. By adjusting how the insert sits inside the mouthpiece, you can change how much air enters the draw. I found that opening it up for maximum airflow yielded the best results, since it introduces more fresh air to keep the vapor smooth.
When it comes to starting up a session, the Aeris has 5 temperature settings and a single button to cycle through them. You can also use the Focus V App to access more customization options (Session timers, precise temperatures, and more).
One thing to note when on the move, the Focus V Aeris generates a ton of power, but that same power can make the battery life feel a bit low.
Overall, the Aeris is better suited for people who just want a portable unit that rips hard. It spans an intense temperature range from 180 degrees Celsius up to a massive 315 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest runners on our list. The unit can get a little warm after a few back-to-back sessions, so giving it a quick 5 to 10-minute pause between loads really helps keep the vapor quality at its best. If you want a pocketable powerhouse that brings genuine e-rig performance on the move, the Aeris delivers exactly that.

The Puffco Proxy Core Kit is a unique entry on this list. The base of the device is exactly the same as the one we reviewed in the New Puffco Proxy. Its modular design allows it to be interchangeable with glass pieces(or core kit) that change how it's used entirely. We decided to give it its own review because the Core Kit changes the experience so much that it was necessary.
So the main change we noticed is its shift away from glass (very fragile), which is one of the main concerns we had when using the default version (New Puffco Proxy). Everything other than the chassis is exactly the same. The proxy has a very strong 3D chamber that uses sidewall heat and terp pearls to keep concentrates consistently agitated and heated.
When testing the Core Kit, Kirill noticed that the Core Kit was a much better fit for him because it has much less risk of breaking. I myself noted that while more portable, the vapor generated is just slightly hotter. The reason is that the change in form factor also shortens the airpath length, so the vapor has less time to cool down. Puffco, in foresight of this, designed what they call the “impact airpath”. It basically directs the airflow as you inhale in a way that spins the terp pearls in the chamber. This combination does a really good job of keeping heat consistent, but it also introduces a bit more to the mix.
Puffco added silicone to the Core Kit. I think it works well to manage heat, but as we see all too frequently, silicone can affect flavor over time. When using the Proxy Core, it's best to give the chamber a quick swab between sessions. I found that keeping the chamber clean really makes a difference if flavor is your main priority.
Using the Proxy Core on the move is where it shines the most. It offers very simple operation (great for on the go) which involves using the single button and LED's to set temperatures based on the presets. It also adds much more customization depth through the Puffco App (can change session timers, temperatures, LED's, and more).
Overall, the Proxy Core does what it was designed for, it's a great addition for anyone who already owns the Proxy base but wants the option to go portable.
- Best For: Users who want a portable, durable concentrate device with app-supported customization
- Vapor Quality: Even vaporization supported by 3D chamber heating and terp pearls
- Build Quality: Aluminum body with a glass-free design for improved durability
- Ease of Use: Simple single-button operation with optional app control for deeper settings
- Battery Life: 1350mAh battery designed for around 12 to 15 sessions per charge
- Portability: Compact and travel-friendly design without fragile glass components
- ✓ Compact glass free design improves durability for portable use
- ✓ App connectivity allows deeper temperature and session customization
- ✓ Compatible with the wider Proxy accessory ecosystem
- ✓ Fast heat up time and simple single button operation

The Yocan Black Pocket made the list thanks to its impressive feature set. The black pocket is a very affordable dab pen that performs well for its price and has become popular among mainstream users.
Among its main features are a 3D chamber, precise temperature control, spinning terp pearls, and a digital display. All features that you'd expect to see in a more expensive unit. The Yocan Black Pocket does a fantastic job at bringing these features together while keeping its core concept alive: Simple, affordable, and gets the job done.
In our testing, we noticed that it definitely works really well, but it requires a bit of trial and error to get it functioning at maximum capacity. Until we understood how the unit works, Kirill and I noticed the vapor was on the thinner side. The solution is simply to inhale for longer, at a very steady pace. Pulling too hard can make the heating a bit inconsistent, steady hits keep terp pearls spinning well. It's also extra important with this unit to keep it upright. On a few occasions, tilting caused a bit of the concentrate to leak. We found that loading too much concentrate at once is the main cause, so sticking to smaller dabs not only prevents leaks but also vaporizes much more efficiently.
That said, the Black Pocket does a great job of incorporating these features, given its price. It features precision temperature control, which allows for one-degree customization in a decent range (204 degree Celsius to 304 degrees Celsius). Because the 360 chamber is powerful, and the unit is intended for portable use, the vapor path isn't too long. This means the heater is close to the mouthpiece, so the vapor doesn't have a lot of space or time to cool down.
Also, as seen with many of the units on this list, silicone is required here to keep heat manageable. There's no way around it, without tweaking the form factor (potentially making it bigger). It does mean that cleaning is a bit more important here. Keeping the chamber and mouthpiece clean will help delay the off-taste you get from concentrates that get stuck in the silicone. The good side of silicone is that it makes the unit much more portable. The Black pocket works well for on-the-go use, just make sure you don't carry the pocket with the chamber loaded.
Overall, the Yocan Black Pocket is great at what it proposes. It's no surprise that it became popular. It's best suited as a budget-friendly entry into the premium feature set seen among the units at the top of the list.

"Most Discreet" Dab Pen
The Linx Blaze Kit is a dab pen that has been around for years at this point. It still performs well enough to make it to the list. We gave it the most discreet wax pen award thanks to its subtle construction, designed in a time when discreetness was much more prevalent. It has two different heating elements, which both prioritize slightly different session styles. It also has a glass mouthpiece which does a pretty good job of keeping the flavor pure.
In terms of using the Linx Blaze, the operation is very straightforward. It uses a single button to control its 4 temperature settings. The reason why it works well as a discreet unit right out of the box is that it's relatively small(compared to others on the list) and can vaporize very quickly, so you spend less time using the unit overall.
When choosing which chamber to use, we found that the decision is based mainly on the type of vapor you are looking for. The Ceramic zero atomizer works best with lower temperatures, which in turn makes it much more suitable for flavor chasers. On the other hand, the quartz Ace atomizer heats up very quickly and produces thicker vapor (less flavorful). After using the Linx Blaze for a while, I believe it's best suited for users who want stronger vapor output. The reason is that its temperature accuracy isn't very refined, and the airpath is quite short, so the Blaze kit already tends to run a bit hot (eventually resulting in a focus on output).
I did still enjoy the flavor with the ceramic atomizer and lower temperatures, it just requires a bit of a pause to let excess heat dissipate before starting a new session.
The heavy stainless steel finish gives the pen a premium, solid feel in the hand, but it also means the chassis conducts heat very well. The housing around the heating chamber will get noticeably hot to the touch during back-to-back sessions. Also, because Linx is a boutique brand rather than a mainstream giant, replacement parts and extra chambers aren't as readily available at local shops and can be harder to track down.
Overall, the Linx Blaze still carves its own space onto the list. It is still a suitable option for users who want a good middle ground between fully accurate heating chambers (expensive but higher quality vapor) and coil-based heating (affordable but lower quality vapor).
- Best For: Users seeking a portable and discreet wax pen.
- Vapor Quality: Good vapor quality with coilless ace atomizer.
- Build Quality: Durable with a soft-touch silicone cover.

The Ooze Booster is a highly functional, dual use dab pen that's very affordable. It made our list because it provides easy entry access to nail like (water filtration) sessions. It works as a standalone handheld dab pen, but it can also be used to fit directly into a glass water rig (like an e nail). To achieve this feat, Ooze built the Booster around a pretty large, coil less heating dish. This allows the unit to generate a decent amount of heat, which is needed to generate vapor thick enough to run through a full-sized water pipe.
When it comes to the testing phase, I found that the vapor profile leans pretty heavily towards thick vapor rather than flavor. This makes sense because water filtration is less needed with flavor-focused units (which work best with lower temperatures). The Booster’s footprint is on the larger side (compared to most slim pens), which is needed to house the wider ceramic core and integrated water pipe adapter base. Its size makes it less suited for pocket carry, and it is mainly suited for home use(or an environment where you can easily connect to a rig).
The main performance features of the Ooze Booster match this output-first philosophy. The ceramic dish operates through a standard power cycle without a heat management system. To keep the unit affordable for mainstream buyers, Ooze utilized plastic for the outer shell and the mouthpiece components. Plastic keeps the initial cost low, but it is more prone to surface scratches and residue buildup over time than glass or metal, requiring regular cleaning to keep it fresh. The ceramic dish is also quite deep and porous, so swabbing it clean cannot fully restore it to its original white color after a session. (We noticed a darker dish even after fully cleaning)
The Booster also has two different heating modes. The first being session mode, which is generally what most users are used to(session timer at a set temperature). The second mode is a lot more hands on. On-demand mode works by only heating up the chamber when the button is actively being held down. It's not an uncommon feature, but it makes a lot of sense for this unit. Kirill noted he found the on-demand mode most useful when connected to a water bubbler(since it ).
Overall, the features on the Ooze Booster are highly cohesive. Every design choice works together to deliver a reliable, high-output water pipe companion for those who are on a budget.
- Best For: Users who want water filtration in an affordable package.
- Vapor Quality: Decent, prioritizes vapor output.
- Build Quality: Plastic Body is affordable but lower quality.

The Linx Hypnos Zero is a dab pen that made it to the list because it was the first to popularize the coil-less ceramic plate. These bottom-heated plates sit right in the middle between the more premium (and expensive) 3D chambers and the more functional (and affordable) coil heaters. The Linx Hypnos Zero keeps its form factor small through a small chamber. We found that the size is great for on the go, quick hits, but works best when using it sparingly throughout the day. The stainless steel body feels solid and looks great, but it stores heat easily. I prefer it to silicone bodies, but it does mean that heat is a little harder to manage. The reason why it gets a bit hotter than usual is that the base doesn't have any paint or cover to manage the heat on the unit itself.
The smaller chamber makes sense when you put the heat management into perspective. The Hypnos Zero is better suited for small, almost micro sessions. Its default chamber works well, but it's also compatible with a quartz coil chamber, which is a bit more in line with the vapor output philosophy.
The Hypnos Zero comes with a carrying case, which does make longer transportation much more feasible. Kirill noted that using a heated dab tool is pretty much necessary with this unit because of its smaller chamber. Dropping the dab in the center of the plate, rather than scraping it off the side of the chamber, will result in much less cleaning and overall better sessions. Because the Hypnos Zero works best with smaller dabs, having any of it stick to the side of the chamber is not ideal.
Speaking of which, cleaning the unit is important as well. While the coil-less ceramic plate spreads heat much more evenly than thin wire coils, the recessed edges of the tiny dish make it difficult to swab completely clean after a load. It's best to swab the chamber after every session to prevent gunk from solidifying and forming layers.
Overall, the Hypnos Zero, while an older unit, can be a great option for users who want a reliable mid-range unit for on the go dabbing.

The G Pen Micro Plus made it to the list thanks to its robust construction and focus on portability. As we've seen on the list and for concentrate units in general, fragile materials are much more common because of their benefits with concentrates. The Micro Plus does a good job of keeping sessions convenient, while in a form factor that is more likely to survive a few drops.
Starting with the materials, the G Pen Micro Plus uses ceramic in the airpath (good flavor), silicone in the body (to reduce heat), and a hemp based travel case. Now, in terms of the actual features, the Micro Plus uses a single button for all of its operations. This is good in use because it keeps the session quick and manageable, which is what you want when on the move. As far as customization options, the G Pen Microplus is a bit limited with 3 preset temperatures based on voltages (2.5V to 3.0V).
When testing the unit, we did mark a few things down, though. Kirill noted that the bottom of the chamber did have a few hot spots (shown on the temperature accuracy images). I myself noticed that vapor gets hot, especially when moving into the higher temperatures. Its small form factor and short vapor path make it hard to dissipate heat, which is why the silicone was necessary here. That said, the vapor quality is ok, it's not on par with vaporizers that have isolated airpaths, but it gets the job done quickly while on the move.
The main reason why is due to the quartz-lined heating chamber. It's a bit outdated in terms of current standards, but it does a good job of providing middle-ground vapor. It's not as immediate (and harsh) as coil-based chambers, and it's not as premium (and expensive) as higher end 3D chambers. The choices in manufacturing don't necessarily point towards vapor flavor or production being heavily prioritized over the other. But in my own testing, I noticed it's best suited for output due to the silicone distorting flavor over time.
Kirill took the Micro Plus on a hiking trip and noted that it worked best in that setting. It's robust enough to resist a few drops. Its settings are super easy to manage, and it can be used in manual mode for complete control over the heating.
Overall, the Micro Plus keeps its spot on the list thanks to its budget-friendly nature and strong focus on portability.
- Best For: Beginners and budget-minded users.
- Vapor Quality: Decent, but not the best.
- Build Quality: Sleek, compact, and durable.

The Yocan Orbit made this list due to its respectable attempt to bring the rig style terp pearl experience down to a very affordable price point. It comes with a quartz cup heater, which heats up quickly. The mouthpiece is made of glass, and it allows for a vortex like airflow to spin the pearls. Yocan kept the costs low by stripping away expensive software and temperature calibration.
Kirill noted that the lack of calibration directly shapes the performance. The bottom chamber is powerful, and the unit can generate quite a bit of heat. Unfortunately, this doesn't provide enough stability to keep the flavor pure, but it keeps the unit very responsive.
After a bit of testing, we noticed two main key points that shape your sessions. The first is drawing strength, and the other is maintenance. Controlling your draws is important because the terp pearls are fundamental to this setup. During a session, it can feel like there's not enough draw power to rotate the balls reliably. This is due to a small piece of silicone (located above the heater, below the mouthpiece) that actively directs the airflow to keep the "tornado" effect going. In practise that design can fail, due to concentrate splashing back and messing with the airflow. Keeping the unit clean is equally important so the pearls spin without getting stuck on gunk.
The full potential of the Orbit really comes out when you can manage its features accordingly. The terp pearls are much more than just an afterthought, which is more than I expected from a unit at this price. That said, it is a bit more finicky than a higher quality dab pen with these features. Overall, the Orbit does a good job of introducing high end features into a budget unit. It's especially good for users who want to get used to, or simply try out, these features(terp pearls, vortex airflow) without breaking the bank.
- Best For: Users who want an affordable wax pen.
- Vapor Quality: Quartz bowl and spinning terp pearls provide smooth vapor.
- Build Quality: Decent construction, but could be more robust.
- Ease of Use: Can have a learning curve, particularly with managing the terp pearls.

About the Dab Pen Ranking List
This Dab Pen Ranking list is the result of over a decade of testing. We refresh this list regularly (if new devices make it to the list). We are also constantly finding new ways to improve our testing, and I ensure those changes get explained here as well.
Over the past couple of years, we shifted our focus heavily towards making our testing process as objective as possible. Starting with the Benchmark Award System (explained below).
In more recent times, we noticed that it’s not only useful to know what a unit is best at but also what it’s not so good at. This is because the best vaporizer for you is the one that nails your top priority, while balancing the trade-offs with criteria you are ok with.
Below, you’ll find a deep dive into these new concepts and why we prioritized these changes to the list.
The Benchmark Award System
Every team member who plays a part in putting devices to the test and therefore making this list possible are cannabis vaporizer users in their spare time. One of the first things we started noticing was that we never felt fully satisfied with a simple 1-25 list. The reason is that vaporizers are much more diverse than one might think. A really good vaporizer for me (I mainly use vaporizers for flavor) hasn’t even made the top 3 for another team member like Kirill (who mainly looks for as much vapor as possible).
So rather than crowning a single overall winner, we pair scores with an award system that highlights each device’s strengths. That way, you can zero in on the one that fits what you actually care about without having to burn time and money testing them yourself.
3-Tiered Framework for Objective Rankings
1- Testing Framework
A- Scientific Process
Dr. Tscheka is primarily responsible for integrating the various parts of our testing to ensure the final score is as objective as possible. Dr. Tscheka applies his PhD (Pharmaceutical Technology) background to ensure the framework is grounded in the scientific method.
B- Material Safety
Dr. Tscheka also ensures the materials used in the vapor path and heated areas are safe and properly isolated from the electronics. We use our own engineering department, which provides the tools and resources to properly dissect and understand these vaporizers and how they really work.
This evaluation is part of our internal review process and is used mainly to inform our rankings. It does not constitute regulatory certification, and is not a substitute for safety approvals issued by regulatory agencies (such as the FDA, Health Canada, etc). If a vaporizer raises concerns during this review, it stops being considered for the ranking, but its inclusion should not be interpreted as a guarantee of safety. We always recommend consulting a qualified healthcare professional when using any inhalation product.
C- Engineering Knowhow
Nima, our CEO, is a veteran vaporizer user and has been reviewing all sorts of vaporizers since 2009. He has directly influenced the cannabis vaporization space through relationships with top manufacturers and through the creation of Thermodyne System’s own vaporizer brands. He uses this knowledge to bridge the gap between the engineering team and us (the testing team). Nima helps us understand the engineering principles behind each device’s tradeoffs that make a vaporizer unique.
Understanding these tradeoffs is essential for us to properly rank the vaporizers we test. With Nima’s engineering know-how, we can accurately dissect what a device does well and call out when a manufacturer is overselling a feature or pointing to the wrong strength entirely.
Nima also does his own teardowns of the units, fully disassembling each device to ensure we know exactly how it functions.
D- Real Testing – The Fun Part
This is the part where Kirill and I actually start using the units. After running through Nima and Dr. Tscheka’s technical data and engineering breakdown, we form our own subjective opinions through multiple session testing. We use the same 8 criteria to rank the vaporizer, but we let our own opinions weigh in. Kirill and I use vaporizers very differently, which works to our advantage because we cover multiple use cases. After sufficient testing, we align our rankings with the rest of the team’s and reach a final consensus.
Other tests are run using the scientific method, such as our Heat signature tests or vapor density experiments. These are designed in a way that is easily replicable to ensure that the least amount of factors vary, and our data can be used comparatively for this reason.
2- Customers’ Feedback
To ensure our rankings are complete, we test as many vaporizers as possible. The sheer amount of volume makes long-term testing complicated. So we work around it by leaning on our customers. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of people use the devices over time and share their experience with us through customer reviews. Good or bad.
Since 2025, our reviews have been managed by Trustpilot, an independent platform that manages reviews. This has proved extremely useful because if customers keep flagging the same issue with a particular vaporizer, we take this feedback into consideration and downgrade its ranking. The opposite is also true, if a device performs better than we initially gave it credit for, we improve its score(within objective reason).
3- New Product Launches
When a more advanced new product launches, units with older technology may be downgraded in order to make space for the higher ratings for the more effective technology to stand out. We routinely update the numerical ratings of all devices during consensus rating meetings held every 6 months. This helps us keep the content and ratings comparable and evergreen, while new devices enter the ranking. We also carry and have tested the largest portfolio of vaporizers in the market, therefore we keep more on the list at any given time than many other rankings lists.
How to Choose the Right Dab Pen
The first step to finding the right dab pen for you is understanding what it is you want from your unit. Usually, there are a few direct questions you need to answer to fully understand what type of device you’re looking for.
1- What do you want out of a session?
I’m sure that if anyone were to answer this, their first answer will be “high quality vapor” nine out of ten times. But high quality can vary much more than you think from person to person. Some people consider higher quality sessions, the ones that simply push the most amount of vapor. Others assume that more flavor automatically means better quality.
These differences are very common, and because achieving both in the same device is very difficult, the first question you need to answer is: what vapor do you want for your sessions? If you could only choose one, do you prefer vapor thickness or flavor. Once that question is answered, the options become much clearer.
2. Where and how will you use the device?
The previous question will leave you with a good understanding of what type of heating, build quality, and price range you will likely need to search in. But, another very important factor to consider is where you will use the unit the most.
It’s important you are 100% honest here since most people overestimate how portable they need their vape to be. If it’s going to live on your coffee table and traveling with it is not in your plans, opting for a slightly larger unit might be perfectly reasonable. If it’s actually going to be traveling in a pocket or backpack daily, then this is one of the main factors you should consider.
3. What concentrates do you use most?
If you are anything like me, you love smelling some wax and then vaporizing it in a quartz or glass bowl to get the absolute best taste possible. That’s why I look for units with lots of airflow, and very inert materials. Plastic and silicone in the vapor path are unacceptable. Now, some people like Kirill (on the team) dont care for terpenes, or flavor in general. He likes to rip units to the max, and will vaporize most concentrates at the highest level he can get his hands on. For someone like that, silicone can be a great material because it keeps things cool, and the drawback of taste really doesn’t matter at all. Larger chambers, stronger heaters, and the ability to restrict airflow for thicker vapor become much more essential.
All in all, similarly to what type of vapor you’re looking for, the concentrates need to match that idea to ensure you are getting the most out of your dabs.
How We Test
Over the years, weve done hundreds, if not thousands, of reviews across all vaporizer categories. During this time, we’ve reworked, adjusted, and perfected our testing methodologies. As I mentioned earlier, the framework Dr. Tscheka built is designed to surface each pen’s real strengths and weaknesses. Across these stages, we score every device on the same performance specs, and the final ranking comes from putting all of those perspectives together.
Also, we recently added controlled experiments to the mix, such as temperature readings with a thermal camera and vapor density tests using a pump system to simulate a session. We also run various tests and show the results in the images of each device ranking. For example, how a bowl looks after heating at different temperatures.
Stage 1: Safety and Materials (Dr. Tscheka)
After a unit is verified by Dr. Tscheka, it is delivered to our office, where we begin by taking it apart. Because we own the devices we stock, we can fully dissect them. And in the first stage of testing, which involves Nima, Kirill, and myself, we do just that. We start by opening the packages up and disassembling the device. What we are doing in this stage is simply looking at and fully understanding how the unit works and how it is built. We are searching for proper connections, isolated airpaths, and any offgassing potential, among other things.
Stage 2: Engineering and Design (Nima)
Once a pen clears safety, Nima looks at it as an engineer. With dab pens, atomizers are a huge factor, so this is where a lot of the most attention goes. He breaks down the chamber design, the coil or coil-less setup, the airflow, and the materials, then judges how well those choices line up with what the pen is actually trying to do. A pen sold on flavor that runs a hot exposed coil is not going to back up the claim, and Nima is the one who calls that out. His read is based on design principles and technical data, not session feel, and his scores become the second set of numbers that feed the final consensus.
Stage 3: Real World Testing – (Mariano, Kirill)
After a pen passes the first two stages, Kirill and I actually put it to the test through usage. We start with a relaxed day of casual use on CBD concentrate to get a baseline for how the pen behaves. From there, we move on to the structured testing Dr. Tscheka outlined. We run the full temperature range and judge vapor quality on both flavor and density. We purposefully test different textured concentrates and write down any noteworthy differences. For the battery, we run the pen down on a setting near the middle of its range and count the sessions. Maintenance is a big one with concentrates, so we track reclaim buildup, how easy the chamber and vapor path are to clean. Ease of use gets scored last, once we have lived with the pen long enough to know what owning it really feels like. These scores are more subjective than the first two stages, and that is on purpose.
Scientific Testing
During this stage, we run structured testing in controlled environments so that the data we produce can actually be used to compare between devices. We accomplished this by creating testing sites in our office (we call it “the lab”), where we test all devices under the same conditions. For our experiments, we use a pump instead of a person to ensure that the testing conditions remain fair.
Temperature Accuracy and Location Readings
We bring each pen as close to 270°C as it allows, precise units exactly, preset units to the nearest setting, and coil units by heating up and letting them settle until the camera reads 270°C. Then we check two things.
1st – Accuracy: Most units run a 10 to 20 degree variance, worse on cheaper ones, and getting a pen to read true and then hold that temperature consistently is genuinely hard. It is one of the clearest signs of a well-built device, and it matters most on premium units, since experienced users depend on that temperature being right.
2nd – Distribution: When the pen does hit 270°C, is the heat even across the coil or bucket, or are there hot spots? If the temperature inside the chamber varies, you get uneven vaporization and inconsistent sessions.
Vapor Density Experiment
The objective of this experiment is to simulate a session and discover how dense the vapor produced by each vaporizer is when compared to the others. We maintain a rigid testing format that involves running a 8 second cycle at a low temperature(we aim for 220°C). We later reset the unit and repeat the same test at a higher temperature (we aim for 270°C).
You can see this experiment at the end of the gallery of each unit in the top 10 units.
Wax Comparison Post Session
In this experiment, we want to give users a clear idea of what the chamber looks like after a short session. The idea here is to compare how well each unit vaporizes the concentrate after 3 draws(on low and high temps).
We also follow a strict format here to ensure the results can be compared accurately. Each test lasts 28 seconds and consists of 3 draws. Each draw lasts 6 seconds with a 5-second pause in between. We repeat the test twice for each unit, once at 220°C and the other at 270°C.
Stage 4: Pricing Analysis (Whole Team)
Once a dab pen has cleared safety, engineering, and real-world testing, it goes through one final review where the whole team meets to set its final placement. Price is the last thing we factor in, and that is intentional.
Why Price Comes Last
A lot of the pens we test are prototypes or pre-launch units, so there often is not a real price to work with during the first three stages anyway. Even when there is, we want the testing scores to stay honest, so the team rates on performance alone first. By the time we reach consensus the performance is clear, and price becomes the final layer that decides where a pen lands next to its competition. We do not put exact prices on the list, but we sort pens into Budget, Budget Premium, and Ultra Premium tiers, which keeps the list accurate and still gives you enough to make a call.
Value Over Brand
Once a device covers the fundamentals, smooth heat, clean vapor, and a chamber that holds up, the gains above that get smaller while the price keeps climbing, often on the strength of the brand alone. A lesser-known pen that nails the basics will frequently land within reach of a flagship that costs far more. So when that happens in testing, we rank the cheaper pen right alongside the big name instead of below it.
That outcome is rare on most ranking pages, and it is worth being clear about why. Most best of lists in this space run on affiliate commissions, and pricier units tend to pay out more, so there is a built-in reason to push expensive pens to the top, whether they have earned it or not. We do not use affiliate links, and we do not earn a commission on what you buy, which means we have no reason to rank a pen any higher than it deserves.
Brand is not nothing. A known name usually means better warranty coverage and longer term support, and we factor that in. But a logo on its own does not move a pen up our list. Every device we test starts on the same footing, and where it ends up is decided by how it performs, not by who made it.
Criteria We Consider When Ranking Portable Vaporizers
Vapor Quality
Vapor quality is the criterion most people care about, so we go deeper here than on the others. Before any single score is assigned, we consider these 4 sub-criteria.
Terpene Expression
This tells us how well the chamber holds onto the flavor profile of the concentrate across the temperature range. Terpenes matter more with concentrates than almost anywhere else, since a lot of what you pay for in live resin, rosin, or sauce is that flavor profile. A chamber that runs too hot or too unevenly flattens those terpenes early in the dab, making the rest of the session flavorless or even harsh. This is where coil-less ceramic and glass chambers tend to pull ahead, and where hot exposed coils tend to fall behind.
Vapor Smoothness
This measures how smooth or harsh the vapor feels, which decides how comfortable a session is, especially on back to back dabs. Concentrates can hit harshly when a pen runs hot, so a device that stays smooth across a full session scores higher here.
Particle Size and Parts Per Million
Here we look at how fine or dense the particles in the vapor are, because that directly affects how the vapor feels when it reaches your lungs. Larger, denser particles are harder for your airways to clear, since your body treats them as something to push back out through the mucus and tiny hair like structures(called Cilia) lining your airways. Your body disposes of particles through a process called mucociliary clearance that is well documented in this peer-reviewed research.
Vapor temperature
This measures how hot the vapor is by the time it reaches your mouth. It matters more on dab pens than on most devices, because concentrates run hot and many pens have a short vapor path with little room to cool things down.
When these come together, we land on a single Vapor Quality score.
Manufacturing Quality
Manufacturing quality is about how well the physical build aligns with what the pen aims to be, and it goes beyond just durability. With a dab pen this overlaps heavily with material safety, because the atomizer and vapor path are in direct contact with everything you inhale for the most part.
This is where Clemens and Nima’s work directly feeds into the ranking. Clemens judges whether the chamber and vapor path materials are appropriate and properly isolated, and Nima judges whether the engineering choices behind them make sense for the kind of pen it is. We are also watching for the small things that fail first on concentrate devices, like threading that gunk up, magnetic connections that loosen, and how well the device feels in use during multiple sessions.
Temperature Flexibility
Temperature plays a huge role in overall vapor quality and session control, but there are a few factors we consider.
Temperature Range & Vaporization Spectrum
The first piece is the range itself, since concentrates vaporize across a wider range than herbs. The low end is where flavor and terpenes live, which is what you want for solventless like rosin, or for terp-heavy live resin. The high end is where density lives. A pen that covers the full spectrum well is rare, because doing both ends justice is genuinely difficult and one of the clearest signs of a well-built device.
Temperature Accuracy and Tolerance
To be able to ensure that everything else works well, we don’t just look at what temperatures the manufacturer describes. The reason being is that every dab pen runs with some gap between the temperature it claims and what the chamber actually reaches. How wide that gap is tells us a lot about the engineering, and it is exactly what our thermal images measure. A tight tolerance takes more precise, more expensive components(sensors). It is especially important as you move towards higher-quality or premium (more expensive) units.
The Illusion of Control
A cheap dab pen with single degree steps and a loose tolerance looks precise on a spec sheet, but those steps mean little when the actual temperature doesnt align with the set temperature. A pen with a few honest(accurate) presets, and a tight tolerance gives you more real control over your session.
Battery Life
With concentrates, battery life is less about hours of runtime and more about how many dabs you get before the pen dies, since sessions are short and frequent. We also weigh whether the battery fits how the pen is meant to be used. A 3D chamber draws more power than a simple coil, so that gets taken into consideration as well. Practical details count too, like pass-through charging, replaceable batteries, and an accurate charge indicator, because a unit that is not accurate with how much battery is left will become frustrating, no matter how long it really lasts.
Portability and Discreetness
Every dab pen is technically portable because the category demands a battery setup which can be moved. Now, there are very real differences between dab pens due to their form factors and feature sets. A slim pen-style unit disappears into a pocket, the chunkier 3D units take up more room, and a pipe-style device like the Proxy is a different proposition entirely. Onboard concentrate storage and a built-in dab tools also factor in here, since they decide whether a pen is genuinely grab-and-go or whether you need to carry a kit alongside it.
Over the years, discreetness has become less of an important factor in general. Still, we consider it, especially on smaller units or if its feature set seems to gravitate towards it.
Ease of Use and Maintenance
Ease of use is important to us because it determines how the wax pen feels to actually live with day to day. We factor this in because a vaporizer that’s complicated to operate, awkward to load, or annoying to maintain is likely to sit unused. We’re looking at how intuitive the controls are and how straightforward loading and cleaning process is.
Kirill and I both give our own scores after all other testing is complete.
Value for Money
We always weigh a device’s performance against its price to determine its true value. We evaluate whether the engineering and vapor quality justify its cost, or whether a mid-range unit offers a similar experience at a lower price.
Transparency and Organizational Disclosure
TVape is not only a review team. We also design and sell our own vaporizers. Our in-house brands include Utillian, Tronian, Zeus, and LITL, and you will have noticed Utillian and Tronian pens on this list sitting alongside everyone else’s.
A company ranking devices it profits from has an obvious reason to favor its own, so here is how we keep that in check. Our pens go through the same process as every other device on this list. Same safety gate from Clemens, same engineering breakdown from Nima, same real-world and scientific testing, same scoring. They do not skip a stage and they are not handed a spot. When one of our pens has a weakness, it goes in the write-up the same way it would for anyone else, trade-off and all.
We started making pens for the same reason we test them. After thousands of devices, you see the same gaps come up over and over, so we built ones that close them. That does not earn our brands a free pass; it just earns the spot it does because we apply the features we want to see ourselves in.
Two things keep us honest. We do not use affiliate links, so we earn no commission on any pen we rank, ours or anyone else’s, and there is no version of this list where favoring one device pays us more. And our customer feedback lives on Trustpilot, which we do not control.
About the Author
My name is Mariano Bustamante, and I lead the wax vaporizer testing team at TVape. While I have been writing about the industry since 2021, my expertise is built on personally testing hundreds of devices across every major category. The rankings on this page reflect my own field evaluations backed by the collective testing and engineering data of the entire team.
Recent Updates
- July 13, 2026: We have updated the results of our testing and experiments on most dab pens on the list. We also added in-depth information on how we conduct our new experiments. The list has been updated, and we have removed discontinued units.
- July 10, 2026: We have introduced the new gallery framework for the top 5 dab pens in the ranking: the dab pen being in use, thermal images of the chamber and the body, chamber/coil images after a session on two different temperature/voltage settings.
- July 2, 2026: We’ve implemented a new standardized scientific testing framework led by Dr. Tscheka to guarantee fully objective, lab-backed evaluations. This supports our transition to a Benchmark Award System, which highlights specific device strengths and engineering trade-offs. This ensures you can easily choose the right device based on your unique vaping priorities.
